UA172 SFO-BOS, 777 Today

Thu Apr 13, 2006 6:01 am

Does anyone know if UA172 is going to be a T7 permanantely?

It definitely took me by suprise when I saw her on approach to 22L today. Pertinent answers, only, please.

UA 172 is routed SEA-SFO-BOS, and the SFO-BOS segment is currently in flight. So where did you see it approach 22L? on United's site shows it as 752 (still in flight)

However just checked in on flightaware and they do indeed show it as a 772. That's a major upgrade from a 752 to a 772 when they could have upgraded to a 763.

I am also curious to know why the upgrade.

So where did I see it: Well, first of all I saw it in the air, as it flew past my house.

Now I wonder why I hate posting on this website. All I asked was a simple question and you totally attacked me.

Again, can anyone answer the question: Is it an equipment sub or will it be a permanent change?

Looks like an equipment sub, because the schedules are still showing a 757.

Randy,
i wasn't attacking you buddy. just from what I saw (on ua's site it showed it still in air) So just take it easy, not attacking you just wanted to know where you saw it. It does have the routing sea-sfo-bos.

I am also curious to know why the upgrade.

172 inbound/179 outbound was an upgrade of equipment to 777-200 (12F/49C/197Y) due to cancellation of UA853 BOS-SFO earlier in the day. With 100% load factors today and through next Tuesday due to April school break, there was a need for additional pax protection.

This is similar to what we did this past Sunday with a 777 from IAD to MCO. It actually flew IAD-MCO-ORD to provide some additional lift and relief for the crowded (overbooked) Florida travel market this time of year.

So they sent a 3 class plane there? Must have been some pretty happy elites and F class flyers

Now that it what I call an equipment upgrade! How excited I would have been to go from a Ted A320 to a 777 Mainline! Makes me hope they don't downgrade my 777 Flight 903 IAD-DEN later today...better not, seeing as how I'm already checked into it...didn't get my bloody upgrade confirmed though. GRR!

I think it's sort of interesting to see how people respond to webboards - not just this one either. I understand how easy it is to take someone's response personally only to realize later it wasn't intended as I took it. Webboards seem to be the biggest problem for those who 1) wouldn't have the balls to say what they would on a webboard and 2) for those who are naturally prone to be confrontational - who carry that even further with the freedom of anonymity online.

With that said, I have learned quite a bit since the time at which I first started engaging these sorts of conversations. I appreciate the examples of some of the more moderate regular A.netters - people who respond well to the rediculousness of less classy individual post-ers and can even engage in controversy without being intentionally inflammatory.

I would love to see that bird coming into Logan.

A couple of months ago, they had a 767-300 as a sub for a 757-200 on the SFO-BOS leg. It had been some time since BOS had seen a widebody from UA.

I was on a flight from SFO - LAX 3 weeks ago and we were supposed to be on a 737. I showed up to the gate and a T7 was sitting there..awesome
Took us only 40 minutes to get down there...but had to wait for a gate to open up for 20 minutes so really didn't matter.

Equip changes CAN be cool

Must be nice having all those big birds laying around an airport to use for subs! Wish AA had the metal to sub T7 on transcons.

Indeed a real treat for the passengers on the UA flights!  Smile

Aren't UA and AA close to each other in terms of 777s deployed & in service? Boston sees a couple 777s from London each day, and if I recall correctly they even had like a Saturday-only 777 in from the Caribbean for a time.

There are a bunch more upgrades scattered around the system, not all for widebodies.
Some A319/320 will get 757s etc..

AA-46
UA-52

UA also has 30 747 for long hauls. They are in a better posistion to use widebodies for sub a/c.

Another difference between the two is that AA's are all configured for 3-class international operation. UA has both 2-class domestic and 3-class international 777s. AA has the advantage of more 767s

AA does 2 daily flights, BOS-LHR-BOS MTWRFSu. On saturdays, they do only 1 daily LHR flight and put the other 772 on a non-stop flight down to SDQ.

It seems that UA is upgrading the second non-stop daily flight between BOS-LAX to a 752, so now there are 2 752s on twice daily service.

I'm pretty surprised that AA goes down to 1 circuit Boston-London on Saturdays. I would think that Saturday is a pretty strong day for travel between these cities, no?

Great to see the increased lift into Boston, albeit sporadically!

Both daily BOS-LAX have been 752s as long as I can remember (at least since the 762s went away). A third daily BOS-LAX goes into effect May 4th with the Summer schedule change. The departure times will be 0720, 0855, and 1820, all in 752 equipment.

There are currently three LAX-BOS return flights, two being 752s and one being a 320. Effective May 4th, the three LAX-BOS flights remain two 752s and one 320, but the 320 gets shifted to the red-eye flight vs. the afternoon flight.

They used to fly BOS-LHR, but that was stopped post 9/11. A while back during the UA and US merger talk, according to their website they were going to start service to FRA and NRT out of BOS. That of course never went down.

It is Hainan Airlines. They are looking to add flights to BOS, BRU, ZRH and a couple of other places using 763s. I am not sure if the flights are going to be out of PVG or PEK, or maybe another city.

I just read an article, they will be offering non-stop flights between BOS and PVG. Cargo service is supposed to start this summer, followed by passenger service by the the end of 2006. Last year, more than 36,000 people flew between BOS and PVG and another 28,000 plus flew between BOS and PEK. Thats over 1,200 weekly passengers between BOS and those 2 Chinese cities. Another reason is the increased cargo exports to China through Boston have grown large amounts over the last few years.
