WSJ: Nome, AK To Spend $3.5m For Airport Expansion

Thu Apr 13, 2006 6:28 am

Just to be sure, Nome had 3,505 people in CY2000.

This article is short, so it qualifies under fair use in its entirety:
Alaska Air Group Inc.'s (ALK) Alaska Airlines will perform a $3.5 million upgrade at its terminal at Nome Airport, in Nome, Alaska.

The Seattle-based airline holding company said construction on the Nome project is slated to start in early June will be completed in March.

Alaska Airlines operates three daily flights to and from Nome and expects minimal disruption to its Nome operations.

Wow. Could they pick a more "out-there" airport? Still, if the terminal is in need of upgrading, I'm all for it. It's quite possible that a fair-sized percentage of that $3.5 mil price tag is markup because of the remote locale.

Anyone from AS know what the work entails?

AS did similar upgrades to thier terminal in my hometown of Dillingham AK, a few hundred miles south two years ago. Keep in mind that the typical "terminal" in rural Alaska is a metal pole barn with no jet way, no baggage carousel, one or two ticket agents and previously no electronic self check in etc.
I havent been to NME, but I have heard the upgrades are much needed.
Also for folks who dont know and to please keep in mind that much of western Alaska has no road connection. We have to fly, if you want to get to ANC, you jump on the AS 732Combi, or on a smaller turboprop carrier. If you need to get to a neighboring village say 20 miles away, you jump on the 208 Caravan or similar bushplane and make the trip.
The school kids in South Naknek AK, make the one mile flight twice a day to school, in Naknek AK about 6-8 kids, they usually ferry them on Cherokees. I thought it would be a great touch to paint the aircraft in a school bus Livery, but that has fallen on deaf ears.

they got milano's pizza downtown as well as a burger king...big time town now...grin...only a mile from the airpatch.

Wondering if the improvement for Nome by Alaska actually means a couple of used jetways are coming....make it easier to board if leaving #1 running due to cold temps.

So do they treat the terminal like a church and only unlock the doors when there's something going on? No sense keeping the hired help around if there's only three flights a day...

Lol! I can imagine that.

Well, I guess if you're flying into (or out of) Nome, you either live there or have a darn good reason to be there, lol. Not much need for warm and fuzzy accouterments, lol

Nope, all the bush towns keep their terminals open normal business hours because of the cargo operations. I think the lone exception is Adak, which only has two flights a week.

AS did a great job with the BRW and DLG upgrades. The DLG terminal used to be a nightmare, especially when the jet was in.

I cant speak for NME, but here in DLG, out of the AS terminal, which is also used by code share Peninsula Airways(KS) KS has three flights a day to ANC on Saab340s and Metroliners there are 3x weekly flights on AS 732Combis. KS also serves extensively as an air taxi with Cherokees, Caravans, and Navajos to the surrounding villages. So the terminal is in more or less constant use from 9am to 9pm. I am not very familiar with the operations up in NME but I would imagine it is quite similar.

One more thing, there was an article in the Alaska Journal of Commerce this week about the proposed upgrades to the Juneau International Airport. Supposedly city leaders have been talking to Condor about possible service after upgrades are completed.

Unfortunately, the article wasn't on the Journal's website this week.

Oh god was it ever, mid June with all the fisherman coming to town, would have a full jet, 60 folks, with lots of luggage, then have a Saab with 30 folks arrive, and at the same time 90 folks are looking to leave out on the same planes. 180 people in a 40x66 or so building with cargo operations going on in half of it, yeah pretty packed. We still have the metal slide for a baggage claim, works alright for function but those rampers arent easy on bags.

Okay, the topic header makes it sound like the city of Nome is spending the money.
I hope AS does well in their OME expansion plans.
I hear at Bethel (BET), they also refurbished their terminal awhile ago.
When I was there, they had three main buildings. One for AS/Era/PenAir, one for Yute Air Alaska/Reeve Aleutian, and the old MarkAir building.

Is this the City of Nome doing that spending, or is it the federal government doing the spending? I know that airport terminal projects largely involve 'local spending,' but I also know that Alaska is legendary for its 'bridge-to-nowhere' federal porkbarrel spending. In truth, any time the expenditure far exceeds the need then suspicion rises...as it should.

LOL - They've been having those discussions since the mid 70s! I remember the talk of thrice weekly flights from Europe and once or twice a week from Japan. At least back then Juneau had two mainline carriers.

Most terminal projects do NOT have local funds, at least in the US. Most of the funds come from the airlines through rates & charges, landing fees. Funds also derive from bonds and grants.

I suppose one could correlate "local" funding to mean the fess that are part of a ticket but generally speaking there is very little local taxes that are involved in airport projects.
