Amazing Beirut Landing Video!

Fri Apr 14, 2006 4:32 am

It has been 12 Years since my last Visit to Beirut. I have to admit is one of the most amazing approaches I have ever seen.
It was Taken on Board A MEA A321 landing during Sunset.

(rabih thanks for the amazing video).

Beautiful approach, well done. I was impressed and surprised to hear the F/A make an announcement in three languages, including French. Is this typical?

Ditto what FOMEA said. Lebanon is the country of three languages.

I love this video - it's funny how you can hear the Lebanese guys talking in the background, very typical, don't know how to describe it but it's funny.

This aerial photo shows the city of Beirut with the airport at the bottom. You can see runway 16 protruding out into the sea which is the runway they landed on in this video.

It is a very nice approach.

All announcements on MEA are made in Arabic, English, and French (in that order).

All of the signs inside the airport are also written in Arabic, English, and French (in that order).

Probably some of the best signage I've seen in any airport.

I can propose two potential reasons:

1. More English speaking visitors than French speaking visitors
2. English is an international language and as such basic English is recognisable in multilingual places more than basic French

Very nice video! Excellent landing. Even after all these years, it's amazing how the aircraft responds to the subtlest of aileron movement.
It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.

I agree PIA777. As an American living in Beirut, and I mean SOUTH Beirut there is an abundance of ignorance today in the US in regards to Beirut and Lebanon in general. Granted the days of the civil war and the terrorist attacks on western countries like the US have yet to leave the American psyche. I can assure all that despite the current US State Department travel advisories, I have NEVER had a incident of discrimination or rudeness from a single person or persons in Lebanon. As a matter of fact, I have been consistantly treated with respect and warmth despite my pitiful Arabic and non-existant French. Beirut is beginning to rise out of the ashes of the civil war and the oppression and economic rape (40 billion US) of the Syrian government. The relationships between the relatively ineficient Parlimentary government of Lebanon and the United States is slowly warming, despite the pitiful efforts of the Hezbullah PM's. Condi Rice has been to Beirut two time all ready in recent memory as a show of support to Lebanon in regards to it's shedding off of the Syrian occupation. Although a certain level of violence does occur in Lebanon, it is usually focused on the most out-spoken opponents and critics of Syria. Hariri's assassination was the catalyst that induced Syria's departure and Syria is none to happy about that.

They always do that when landing in Beirut, and sometimes other destinations, if the aircraft is full of lebanese. If the landing is more tricky I guess they clap more. I thought this to be retard, but hell maybe it's nice after all, especially for the pilots.
That was a perfect landing anyway, it deserved a clap  Smile

It's pretty common to find this when arriving home in the Middle East, particularly if you've come in from somewhere far away and there a lot of expats on board or if the passengers had been gone a long time.

Same thing when landing in Istanbul, Cairo, even Larnaca on occasion.

yes i was on a flight where we had clapping when we landed , according to the passenger next to me it was because we had a female pilot,so perhaps this flight had female pilots as well.

Not likely and not necessary for the clapping. It happens quite often when you land in Lebanon, it's that people are excited to be there and it's a tradition to show your glee by clapping.

Hi!

First of since my childhood I knew that Lebanon was "The Switzerland of the Midle East", and BEY looks to me like a great place to visit....and I'm very lucky because I have a very good friend that is lebanese and lives there since maybe 20 years or more...so after this video I might consider visiting him!!! The second thing is the fact that the aproach to BEY was so smooth that almost makes you nervous...is it always like that??? Did you noticed that those wings were so steady? It was a perfect landing, and I can also aplause those MEA pilots, they are one of the best!

Honestly, I dont see anything all that exciting about this video....Nothing Amazing about it at all...
If you go to flightlevel350 you can see clones of this tired old scene over and over....
What would be an amaizing video would be runway side video of takeoff and landings at the Beirut Airport....Then that would be truely amazing.

Just my opinion...

Yep, nice video!
Brings back some good memories. I've been there last December and had a pretty good time. Not only in Beirut. As the country is even smaller than Holland you won't need to check out from your hotel. Everything can be done in daytrips. You can see almost everything in a week time, probably even less.

On the other hand I haven't seen much of the airport activities due to the late arrival from FRA. When you walk along the Corniche (the coastline in Beirut east-west) you can see the planes passing by and, depending on your location, see them touch down on the 16 about 5 kilometers down south. Pigeon Rocks is a good place for spotting but if you plan to take pictures don't go there in the afternoon as the sun is not in the most favourable position by then. Sunset however is very nice over there.

Lebanon and Beirut dangerous? Well, when on the road and crossing the street it sure is. (Just experienced the same in Iran and Colombia) For the rest it's okay. The war ended in 1990/1991 and having been there about 9 months after the assassination of former PM Rafik Hariri tension wasn't that high anymore. At least as far as I could notice.

BA,

I flew on LH with return from DAM on OS. Almost all of the LH-flights to BEY arrive and return very late (or way too early... just how you want to see it). As far as I know most European carriers have similar schedules to/from BEY in order to offer connections on flights to the USA and Canada.
MEA flies to/from FRA in the daytime. I chose to fly LH as I could use my FT-points then.

Best regards,
Steven

What is LH operating to Beirut these days- their schedules are always a bit vague when it comes to the aircraft type.
Anything from an A319 to A321 is scheduled, although I have heard that they send A300s during the summer months? (A friend of a friend of a friend claimed that last summer they travelled on a 744 BEY-FRA is there any truth in this?!)

Is there any chance that BEY could see regular widebodied service from LH?
