New LBA-TCP Flights

Sat Apr 15, 2006 1:46 am

Finally LBA will get charter flights to Egypt starting this winter with a weekly Astraeus flight to the Sinai Red Sea resort of Taba.

I'm surprised TCP will be launched ahead of SSH or even HRG. Are any other tour operators expected to launch LBA-Egypt flights this winter?

It seems that the flights to Taba are testing the water as they only run for a few weeks prior to Christmas 2006 during the tour operators quiet period before all the ski charters begin. Hopefully this will be a success and pave the way to a full program in Summer '07 or the following winter. I know SSH has been mentioned quite a lot and can see this being added sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately LBA suffers from a largely unimaginative choice of sun destinations if you don't want Spain/Canaries, so Egypt is a very welcome addition!

Yeah the service will run for 6 weeks which is a fair start. I hope/expect more LBA-Egypt flights to be announced for the winter 06/07 season as it's the peak European tourist season in Egypt. More importantly Brit numbers to Egypt during the first 3 months of 2006 was 32% higher than the same period last year. Impressive.

How many aircraft do the likes of MYT, Monarch, Thomsonfly, etc have based in LBA for charter work?

Its quite surprising that LBA's first Afirican service is Taba and not SSH or Monastir

Im not so sure. With DSA-SSH as well next winter, I think any more Egypt flights might be too much.

Summer:

1 Astraeus B737 (mainly for Airtours)
1 ThomsonFly B757

Winter

1 Thomson Fly B757 for half the week

Charter services are very poorly served from LBA in comparison to other similar sized UK regional airports. The only based charter aircraft in summer are a Thomsonfly B757 or B767 and an Astreaus 73G. In winter it is even more bleak!

TOM already offer SSH in winter from DSA and are protecting their new DSA base at all costs so expect AEU to be the one to operate any new services to Egypt. In theory it would be quite simple for say, Mytravel and First Choice, to split the capacity on a weekly AEU flight.

Of course it is possible that another carrier could do a 'W' pattern flight in and out of LBA but Astreaus have been quite proactive here in the past year or so and seem to be a little less blinkered than the charter airlines which are tied to tour operators.
