Since they're headquartered here in Indy, and I know that they're Republic Airlines, and they have the RPA identifier I am constantly catching myself starting to call them Republic every time I key up to say something to one of them, then I stop myself in midsentence and change it to Brickyard.

I wish that they would have found out that the Republic callsign was already taken early on so they could have applied to use an identifier like BYD or BKY so that Brickyard would roll off of the tongue easier when I'm looking at the data block.

ZID--I don't know how you guys ever kept from calling USAir (AAA) "American" (AAL).

BTW, what sector do you work? We go out the Rocky a lot. (IND-based G550's) Take care.TC

How is it that the Republic Airlines name is being used? Wouldn't Northwest own the rights to that name?

We are a holding company. But no NW does not own the name. There was Republic Airlines we are Republic Airways Holdings.

For us the identifier for USAirways is USA, so that's pretty easy. I can't remember when USAir changed their name to USAirways, but at least since 1991 our identifier for them has been USA.

My sectors overlap the eastern half of Kentucky and the southwest half of West Virginia.

Yes, you guys are Republic Airways the holding company, but one of your subsidiaries is Republic Airlines, along with Chautauqua and Shuttle America. I forget how it came about but Republic Airways does now own the rights to Republic Airlines, but when it comes to callsigns there are no rights. Once the original Republic was purchased by Northwest it's callsign was up for grabs. It's my understanding that an airline in southeast Asia is using it. Perhaps somebody in the know could let us in on the identity of the current owner of the Republic callsign. And if that southeast Asian airline doesn't fly into the United States and Republic doesn't fly outside the United States then why can't they both have the same callsign?
