Did LTU Fly Dusseldorf-Daytona Beach Nonstop?

Tue Apr 18, 2006 7:11 am

I was talking to a friend earlier today, she told me that she wants to fly to DAB in a few months to visit some relatives there. She complained that there is no nonstop flight and that she has to change planes at least one time. I told her that LTU is flying nonstop from DUS to DAB and she said that she will take a look at LT's website later. I just got a call from her, she told me that LTU isn't flying DUS-DAB nonstop..... I just looked as well and saw that she is right.

Did LT fly to DAB in the past? I am almost 100% sure that there was a nonstop flight.

When did they discontinue these flights?

Yep...Not sure exactly when it was dropped but I think it was either late 90s or early 2000s. The Int'l Terminal looks mighty empty now...

It ended in 1997, my first year at ERAU, so only 9 years ago.

Wow, I am so up to date when it comes to the LTU schedules.  Wink At least they flew to DAB, so I am at least a bit right.  Wink

Thanks for clarification!

LTU used to fly a non-stop B767 to DAB, which continued to Fort Myers, if am not mistaken.

The service was discontinued in 1997 i think. It was also my first year during undergraduate at ERAU. After so many years, i'm back for my masters and the international terminal is just plain dead.

It went DUS-DAB-ADZ(San Andres, Colombia) with an L-100-500. It then operated DUS-DAB-MIA-DUS with the 767-300ER and MD-11.

According to the Winter 1995-'96 timetable I have, the flight was operated as LT916 nonstop DUS-DAB with an L-1011 every Thursday.

Correct. Also operated every Thursday and through DAB. DUS-DAB-ADZ was operated as LT420. However sometime later, the flight was tagged on to flight LT932 (I remember because my flight left to ADZ when I arrived) and was operated with an MD-11. The routing was DUS-MIA-SJO-ADZ, and this was in December 1997, more or less when DAB was axed.

Just to add my 2 cents...It'd be nice to see LTU come back to DAB, even it was just winter and spring seasonal service  Smile If you want to see the world stop at ERAU for at least 2 minutes, bring one of LTU's big birds in here  Smile

You certainly are right, they did fly to DAB in the past. As others mentioned above, they stopped shortly before 2000.

I remember in 2001 when I was moving from Frankfurt to Daytona Beach I was looking into flying LT in FirstComfort. Sadly I could not find Daytona Beach on their destination list so I settled for DL via ATL.

a ok, I always thought the flight to ADZ was operated Nonstop with tag on to SJO....

it would be great if LTU would reinstall the flights to ADZ

And SJO as well, but preferably if only as a direct flight and not nonstop, then at least with a stop in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica or Cuba, though DE probably has the market for themselves at the moment when it comes to Germany to Central America flights. Most PAX would be VFR anyway, so this could make the route unprofitable for LT (at least with their current business model). If LT could come back to the roots of being only a holiday carrier, perhaps this could change.

Direct DAB-Germany service would be a great treat. I personally would prefer a DE763 service DAB-FRA.  bouncy

LTU started DAB not too long before I left in 1996. They initially started with L-1011-500's. I don't know if I have photos of it. I'll have to look. I remember seeing a MD-11 there once.

Off the subject...but Rich International had charters out of DAB during the 1990's also.

When was the international terminal built? From what I understand, there is only one gate (jetway). Does anyone use it at all? If not, is the building simply closed? What a shame...

I can't recall any jet ever using the intl jetway in the near past. I know that alot of biz jets do utilize the customs service. They are on duty 24 hours obviously, thus allowing the airport to call itself international.

I attended Embry Riddle in the late 70's and on several occasions back then, during spring break, I flew in and out several times on EAL's L1011's to ATL....There was one even leased from Air Canada in full A/C colors with Eastern titles! This was done from the old terminal and without airbridges. It was fun lugging up the several flights of portable airstairs!

While I went to ERAU from 1989-1996, DAB managed to get a couple of Canadian carriers...Canadian and Intair.

LTU used the building that was the old terminal at DAB. At the time I was there, there were no jetways...they used airstairs.

Since we expanded the topic a bit...Didn't AC try some seasonal service from DAB to YYZ for a bit?

Yes, I believe they did a few years ago, using CRJs (just like they did with Jacksonville). It didn't last long, however.

On another note, why is there such a decrease in traffic in the Daytona Beach area? Have tourists gone elsewhere in Florida? Did the "spring break" reputation keep tourists away in droves?

Actually it never started to begin with, they were going to be Sat only flights, but they didnt have or arrange any packages to go with it, so they cancelled it before it began.

Tourism and airport traffic have been better in recent years, its just not the ourism that Daytona is known for. Spring breakers are mostly gone and it has become more of a family/condo/timeshare destination.

On another note the evidence of german charters can still be found in DAB's INTL terminal as well as the domestic terminal. The internation charters have Signs in English German and i believe Spanish was the 3rd language.

Also on the ground at Gate 3, L-1011 markings can be seen The aircraft was an L1011 for a few eyars I beleive and it departed form the domestic terminal.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

So what efforts, if any, are the airport authorities doing to attract international traffic at the moment? Is the terminal per se closed (shops, concession stands)? I know there are immigration/customs officers, but since no airlines fly in or out of the terminal, I imagine that the "terminal" portion is closed.

The international terminal is the former passenger terminal, so its old and there are no concessions. There is a small departure lounge used by Vintage Props and Jets (name of an airline, not aircraft description!) for flights to the bahamas. The main usefor the old terminal is general aviation and corporate traffic and vintage who pull up on the ramp and then walk into the building into the customs area (passengers arriving from the jetway would ultimately end up in this area.

Its not modern and its not great but they can process alot of people quickly and they used an old building that wasnt going to be used.

Now that we're more or less off topic  Wink, I figured that I'd join in. Has anybody heard anything about new and/or expanded service to DAB? Like DL restarting CVG-DAB, UA expanding ORD-DAB service, US starting PHL/CLT-DAB, or any LCC service lately? I'd love to see B6 at DAB, just so I won't have to drive to MCO to go home next year.

Daytona is in the middle of a transition right now. Having vacationed there in my grandparents condo for the last 8 years or so, I've noticed a lot of changes. There is a huge transition from 8 years ago, which was spring break era, to about 4 years ago, where all they had was bike week and the races. Now though, Daytona is transitioning to the Beach of Orlando. I meet more and more tourists coming from Disney World, Universal...etc looking for the closest beach (Daytona). But another contrast is that most of these people tend to be on the wealthier side than Daytona is used to. Also, there are so many new upscale condos going in at Daytona Beach Shores that are going to boost the economy...etc. I think you're going to see Daytona Beach transition into Orlando's version of West Palm Beach.

Hopefully in Daytona they'll start to see much more traffic because DAB is a beautiful airport and I always wish the best for the city itself. MCO and SFB being so close really doesnt help though... And LTU coming back is a little bit of a long shot right now. Start with B6, who always talks about DAB with E190s and work up to European carriers... baby steps.

Didnt KLM use to fly to DAB as well, with DC8s?
