The History Of The Lockheed L-100-20 With DL

Hello A.net while I was searching photo's of DAL (Love Field) I discovered that around 1969 DL had Lockheed L-100-20 Hercules. I Also check of the database and found nothing posted on this topic before. I would like to know more on the history of this service and other routes that this A/C was on and was it only used for Cargo.

All I can tell you is that Delta operated five L-100's during the late 1960's and early 1970's. N1130E cn 3946, N9268R cn 4147, N9258R cn 4170, N9259R cn 4176 and N7999S cn 4234.
They were among the very first customers for the civil L-100, and in fact they claim to have started the first L-100 cargo service in 1966. I have no info on specific routes flown etc. All L-100's were sold by 1973.

Which C-130 version is that equivalent to, out of curiosity?

And are there any civilian sales of current C-130 models?

(I could see UPS/Fedex/et al keeping a few around for special lifts/moves needs)

After all, you never know when you need to move a whale or something ...

The L-100s replaced the Curtiss C-46s they used as freighters and as engine-hauling/maintenance a/c (which back in those days was commonplace at airlines.)

There actually have been proposals for an L-100J, based on the C-130J, but nothing has really progressed on the project.

IIRC, the L-100-20 was either the same length as military C-130's or slightly longer. They also lacked certain military features such as doors for deploying paratroops.
As well as the small underwing aux fuel tanks. (replaced on C-130 military tanker versions by the hose gear).

The L-100-30 was longer however.
Forming the basis for later C-130H-30 military models.
Though the first stretched military models were conversions, in 1978, the RAF started to convert C-130K C.1's (basically a UK spec C-130H), to the C.2 config.
The extra fuselage lengths being added just forward and just aft of the wing, Lockheed did the first one, Marshalls in the UK doing the other 29.

In 1979/80, Lockheed proposed a new civil version, a twin engined variant (I cannot recall the powerplant type), but there were no takers and none were built.

Delta had three L-100-10s which entered cargo service in 1966, rplacing Curtiss C-46s. The original three were returned to Lockheed Georgia in 1968 where they were stretched by over eight feet and renamed L-100-20s. In the mean time, three other L-100s were operated by Delta on short-term leases. The arrival of the 747s, DC-10s, and, later, Tristars with their enormous belly space, made the L-100 fleet redundant and all were sold in 1973.
