Has Anyone Witnessed A Plane Crash: Vol 2

Wed Apr 19, 2006 5:44 pm

The previous thread was 138 at last count. Time to start volume 2.

Question: Has anyone ever witnessed a plane crash?

I was driving home on the highway and noticed a low-wing aircraft getting very low, flying towards us. The airplane was out of fuel and decided to go for an emergency landing on the busy 6 lane highway! He touched down in the grass center divide. After touching down, the plane jerked to the right, across 3 lanes of traffic, managing to miss every single car and plowed into the hill at the side of the road. Fortunately for the two occupants, the airplane lost enough energy that it was a survivable impact. Quite startling. Everyone pulled to the side and watched.

In chronological order and, unfortunately, in worsening consequence:

This ultralight's wing literally snapped during a loop, but the pilot made use of an emergency recovery chute.

When this "Vintage Pair" of Meteor and Vampire trainers collided, the Meteor's tail was damaged severly enough that it spun in and the two people aboard were unable to get out. The two in the Vampire successfully ejected and the plane continued in wobbly flight for a few seconds before stalling and then plunging straight down.

The Frecce Tricolore crash at Ramstein was truly a major disaster.

I was among the thousands of people who saw the spectacular yet miraculously injury-free MiG-29 collision at Fairford in 1993.

I still occasionally attend air shows, but the enjoyment is tempered by the fact that, in the back of my mind, I know that things can go very wrong.
