Ms Rehwald has to obtain various permits to go ahead with construction.

In particular, she has been asked by the civil aviation authorities to mark the elements of the plane visible from the sky to show that they are not part of a crashed aircraft.

What a crazy but innovative idea~ The wing is already a complete self supporting structure so all that needs to be done is to put it on some supports at the root and the tip, make it water tight (which might be a nightmare), put some glass around the sides~ easy peasy...

Personally, I'm very very very envious.  bomb  Only in America I guess.
I think this is a nice way for a plane to keep on living.

Just what I was going to say - nice business if you can get Anutters interested - refurbished 747 cockpit for "study" or a wet bar ? they would have to do something about the restrooms though ....  bigthumbsup

There actually was a nightclub in Rochester NY that was called the 747. The interior was that of a 747. Interesting bar.

When first reading the title, I thought it meant a house inside an INTACT 747. Now I realize it is just the wing. The design looks nice though.

If I were to do something like that, I would keep the plane fuselage intact and refurbish the inside to fit my needs which would include: having the bedroom on the upper deck, shower in the cockpit area (with iced over windows of course  Wink), living room in the nose, dining room in the middle, kitchen after that, and a den at the tail. That would be AWESOME!!!

P.S. this of course would only be my summer home!  Wink

Not really..."The wing of the Boeing jet will be used for the roof, its nose as a meditation temple while its trademark "bulge" will serve as a loft."

She will be using more than just the wing. Sounds neat though

Well she has taken a different approach..
There is a company that has been converting 727's to homes for years
http://www.maxpoweraero.com/ACHomes.htm

I would love to upscale that and use a 747... use the wings as decks, home theatre in the tail section using the natural slope there. Office in the cockpit, lounge above the wings, bedroom upstairs and in the nose, storage space, laundry and gym in the hold, kitchen between the lounge and the tail. yeah  Smile

I've been thinking about this for 3 years now  Smile

There is a lady in Benoit, MS that has house made out of a 727 fuselage still intact. She has had it for at least 10 yrs. She even has it open for tours. It looks really cool. I remember when they had to tow it down Hwy 82 from Greenwood. She bought it from the Memphis Group.

Awww, I wanted to be the first to do this...

Actually my idea was to take retired aircraft and convert them to homes (sleeping areas, at the minimum) for the homeless.

I wonder, how heavy is a 747 with no seats, galleys, engines, apu, fuel?
Empty weight of an operational 747-200 from memory is about 177,000kg
do you think it would come in at under 100,000kg? Also how heavy are the wings? If transporting a fuselage only with no wings or tail I would imagine it would be around 60,000kg?

Press "flere" for more pictures.

It says that the owner is an Mercedes-Benz dealer in California who wanted a environmental friendlyhouse with feminin shapes. The designers answer was to recycle a Tower Air 747. The section with the upper deck is to be used as a guest house  Smile

Pictures: Woman building house from Tower Air 747 told by FAA to mark 'crash site'

A Californian woman attempting to make a home out of a retired Boeing 747 has been told by the US Federal Aviation Administration to use clear markings on the fuselage parts to avoid alarming passengers flying into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
