YYC Spotters: UA 777 Is Here Right Now

Fri Apr 21, 2006 6:18 am

I just got into work (15:15) and there's a UA 777 parked at gate 22. I'll figure out why it's here and post the info here when I have time. Hopefully somebody caught it! Gotta run

I assume it was some sort of diversion? Interesting though--haven't been too many 777s in YYC right? have there been any?

UA877 ORD-KIX..

Most likely a medi diversion.
Boy I miss those machines. They haven't been around in this city for years now.
I first saw them in 2000 and 9-11 diversions. There was a 744 which came in 2002 and that was it for UAL heavy diverts. The 747 that time when it came in did a very tight 2 mile final pulling a very open Kai Tak style approach.

Thanks for the heads up Kris, I was in school so it was already too late.
Hopefully any of the spotters got it.

When I worked the ramp in YYC, a UA 777 made a medical diversion one afternoon. It was either in the summer of 2001 or 2002, but if I had to pick one, I'd say it was 2001. I remember watching it from behind PLH with a handful of fellow rampies take off to the south.

When the G8 summit was held in Kananaskis, Tony Blair came in on a BA777. I was also working the ramp that day when all of the dignitaries' planes came in. I have pictures somewhere.

Speaking of old times, is ATS still in business there?

Yes it was a medical diversion, and it had to dump 200,000lbs of fuel over the prairies before landing  Wow!

We used to get ANA charters in the summer with 777's

Yes they are, in fact I used to work for them. But now I'm at AC and I'm MUCH happier.  Smile

So did I- Summer of 2001 and 2002 (I can't believe it was that long ago). Fun job, but I know what you mean about being happier  Smile When were you there?

I was there in summer of 2002 as well. I was laid off after they lost the Westjet contract. I came back in spring 2004 for another stint on their international side till Nov. that year. A few months later I was hire by AC.

Now we know why Alberta has oil...

What do these 200,000 lbs of fuel become? Vapor that goes back up in the atmosphere? Droplets that fall on the cowboys' hats and on the cows' grass?

Scary in any case...  crazy
When I doubt... go running!

200,000 lbs of Jet A at 6.82 lbs per gallon is 29,325 gallons. At current prices of about $2 per gallon, that dump cost $58,651. A HMO would let a patient die for that kind of money.
