Air Rum From Sierra Leone: Very Worrying

Fri Apr 21, 2006 9:57 pm

I saw the thumbnail for the current photo of the day and thought at first glance I could see a BA tail in the background:

Upon opening it up I can see it's acutally a Tri-Star from a charter airline called Air Rum. I'm sure you'll agree the tail on (one!) of the Tri-Stars is very BA-esque. Differs from other tails in the fleet. I took a look at their site and found out it's registered office is in Sierra Leone, with the operations office in Jordan. Anyone know why that is?

The English on the website is interesting. One of the main links on the homepage is to 'Safety and Reliability', which is something you don't often find on the first page of a site and although the intentions are good, it doesn't inspire much confidence.

On the left hand side of the hompage is a scrolling box which gives you links to photos of the aircraft. Some interior and exterior shots which are fine, but at the bottom of the scrolling box are hyperlinks titled 'LOL', there are a few of them. When you click on it another window opens with an image that won't load and a caption stating nothing but: "BWAAAH"

Most worrying of all though is if you click on their 'Services' link, you are confronted with this text:

y0u g0t 0wN3z By (( Eddy_BAck0o )) AM in Jordan Dude !! Catch Me iF u Can !! Am Challange Your Security ! i Did Broke iT ! The reazen For This Hacked = y0u prevent of Me My Study !! So i Prevenet you and Any Server in ( Jordan ) . See Yaa s00n (*^~)

Click on the Insurance link and you will come across this:

We are a family in Air Rum … From one of the most important principle and role for our company, Air Rum is really committed to ensuring passengers the highest safety standards so Air Rum fleet, passengers, and crews are insured through one of the most leading insurance brokers in the world - Willis Ltd. of London. We take care for you on Air Rum..

The Destinations section is certainly worth a look.

They operate 5 Tri-Star, reg's are: 9L-LDV, 9L-LEQ, 9L-LEU (Ex Delta), 9L-LFB, 9L-LFC. Very little in the way of photos on the database.

Anyone had any experiences with them or have any additional info?

The "BA" liveried Tristar is actually the basic colours of Orient Thai, of which they took over some Tristars.
Their website is typically done by the "little nephew of the boss". On the other hand, they are not offering scheduled services so probably few bother to visit it anyway, which result in that they probably forgot to check if it was safe for hackers etc.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Exactly, it's the Thai flag -- nothing to do with BA!  Smile

A question: under the plane summary for 9L-LEU, it lists "On Condition" as the serial number for engine #3. What is that supposed to mean?

Wasn't AirRum the airline that declared an emergency so the flight crew could land and watch a soccer game in South America a couple of years back?

My favorite quote from the website, from the "our fleet" section:

"Air Rum L1011 aircraft are powered by three RB211 Rolls Royce’s engines which give the enough thrust for the aircraft.

Very Reassuring  Smile
Certainly a prerequisite for any plane I'd be willing to fly.

Here's a link with some more info on some of Air Rum's L1011 that were formally with Delta.

These aircraft will be busy during the Hajj pilgrimage mostly on charters to Africa but the rest of the year just get the odd job here and there, like that football thing last year. Jordan has a few of these types of airlines I think.

Kind of sad to see such a magnificent aircraft spend the dusk of its life with such shady outfits.

Well you can't say they have crews that lack initiative and creative solutions  Silly.

Its nice to know that you are insured by Willis Ltd. of London when you crash on AirRum.

If they can't even get a decent website in the air, what about their planes?
Its all about supply and demand...
