The first Video (Landing KLM 747) has nothing exceptional for SXM ... just the daily routine !

I find much more impressive, amaizing, chilling, scaring, (everything you want in xxxxing) to be right at the end of a Rwy under a plane taking off.

The second video of the taking off A340 is really great !

I love the way it just skims above the water like it's on rails. Gorgeous, and I'm definitely going this year. Got to, before the Yanks through their toys out of the pram about it being a risk to terrorism and close the beach.

"...and I'm definitely going this year. Got to, before the Yanks through their toys out of the pram about it being a risk to terrorism and close the beach."

I'm sympathetic to the sentiment about my country's government seeing a terrorist threat everywhere they look....but isn't St. Maarten a Dutch possession? How can US authorities close the beach? (or were you just being sarcastic?)

Either way, who on this forum doesn't want to go to St. Maarten to spot?  Smile The best I've been able to manage is the infamous In-N-Out burger off Sepulveda near LAX.

I know it's Dutch but if the FAA or TSA decide St Maarten is too dangerous for US airlines, they could ban US carriers from flying there unless the beach is closed. A TSA-enforced boycott by all the US carriers is going to damage the St Maarten economy far more than a boycott by a few planespotters.

I have also seen that video but this time it prompted me to pull out the 747 Operations Manual which has a chart for the minimum cooling time by weight and airspeed should maximum braking be applied. I wonder what level of breaking is used at this airport? The chart indicates that at 450,000 pounds, and brake application at 120 kts, 37 minutes should elapse before anyone approaches the mains. My guess is they are not using max braking but that they are still very hot and the guys on the ramp there know to stay clear!

Also, the guys in the takeoff video that Nighthawk shared should have watched the UAL training video where they drive a ramp truck about 50-75 meters behind a 767 parked at the gate. Don't know what power setting it is at but the truck is blown out of the picture. If any one knows where that video is, it would be a could link to post.
...are we there yet?

I seem to remember a MythBusters episode where they tried to blow a car off a runway. I also found these pictures of similar interest. (I can't find any more related info)

Granted, it was only a Citroen, but the amount of power from that 747 is still impressive.

That is from a rather famous Top Gear episode where they did the test using a Virgin Atlantic 747 with the inboard engines at full power. Mythbusters were stopped from doing it due to insurance problems.

The Topgear video is on You Tube if I remember correctly.

When I read comments like this I just have to chuckle at the lack of any understanding of aviation, aviaiton authorities, treaties, security, and the airport and government of St. Maarten itself.

Yawn.
