Marriage Proposal By ATC [clip]

Sun Apr 23, 2006 1:13 am

Hope I share this ATC conversation clip here , which seems to be recently occured (April?) about an Vancouver Canada based ATC proposed to his girlfriend on the plane.

http://airplanepilot.blogspot.com/2006/04/marriage-proposal.html

which points to a recording here:
http://www.futurastudios.com/atc-marry-me.html

It seems to me, based on the quality of the recording, that it may be an actual tower recording.

Enjoy!

Any other country in the world and this guy would have lost his job - I really admire Canada (and the USA for that matter!) for their "relaxed" approach to the more unusual occurrences in life...

Well done Bryson!

That is so cool!!! Congrats to Mr. Katzel! Well-played by the captain too... "I chickened out..." 'aww come on '

If I get thru ATC school without getting married I am SOOO going to do that too (provided of course it's not breaking a few laws)

In my younger days when I still had dreams of being a commercial pilot, I imagined I would do the deed by having the lucky lady (whoever that may be) on the same flight I was working and proposing over the intercom or something...awwwww.

it's probably been done before anyway, and now that I ain't doin the pilot thing, merely a pipe dream...

I wonder if theres a cute way for a journalist to propose to his girlfriend? Probably I should find a girl first before I start proposing...

anyway, good clip, haha.

I think he ended up going off frequency to do that and was talking to only AC187, which was already on the ground at that point.

Wauw he has steel nerves! You could just hear by his voice he is very *very* nervous.

As for the legal stuff maybe they can just make an exception! I don't think any other airplanes were bothered by it as much as they were amused.

I agree with you. I heard them talking about the which assigned gate they had to go to, so I assumed they were already on the ground taxiing to their gate.

In any way, it's a very nice idea by the Air Traffic Controller and I wish him all the best of luck with his wife. Congratulations Big grin

The guy would not lose his job as ATC controllers everywhere will strike up conversations if they have the airtime. For such an important event like that, which was nicely done, everyone in that tower would've been appluding him.

Yes it did, its hard enough doing it in person but do it over the radio to 100 some people. The sucky part is that he couldn't see or hear her.

Awesome clip. Very nice of the pilot for first officer to be that cooperative. My favorite line was, "She's jumping up and down...I can hear her from up here...The whole plane is shaking!" ...Or something like that, lol. Best of luck to the couple--are they gonna have a ATC-themed wedding, too?  Wink

The controller mentioned the flight was AC YMX-YVR, so what a/c would they use on that route? I'm curious mainly because I'd love to know how big (or small) this a/c was to cause it to shake from one person, lol.

Yes, that's a pretty commonly accepted practice. After all, what else is a place like Albuquerque Center going to do at 3AM?  Wink

Also, if I heard correctly, they pulled that plane off the standard frequency for that (so no one would be stepped on) and probably put another controller in. For something as big as THAT, I'm sure he cleared it with the supervisor beforehand.

All in all, that was a GREAT idea  cheerful

True. However, I have seen where guys propose to their girlfriends inside a packed sports stadium during halftime with 30,000 people cheering them. Good luck to this guy and his new wife. It sure took him alot of balls to do what he did.

AC 187 is currently listed as an E190. Not sure if there's room to jump up and down in one of those though  confused

Yes, it is a standard option - hardly ever used. I guess there is one or two carriers areound who even broadcast all cockpit converstions through an IFE audio channel.

Well, that's what ATC's are trained to do; to be multi-taskers and keep up with great stress while juggling a number of balls in the air...

I pay my respects to both the ATC and the AC captain who made it possible in the coolest manner possible...

E190 wouldn't be flying over 2,000 miles. AC has one 767 flight a day and three A320/321.
Also no scheduled flights out of YMX

It'd have to be fairly recent, as the a/c didn't enter service until sometime last year, correct?

Thats true, although in a VERY different situation, after a LONG flight from ADS to DAB, with a few diversions due to storms, a controller stuck up conversation with me on a leg from ATL-DAB at around 2330L. Apparantly we were the only plane on his scopes, and he was working two stations.

And yes... It took large "cajones" to pull that off. Much better than my waiting for the right moment with candle light and all that stuff...

You bet he is. But it happens all the time, and I don't think anybody will really care, especially on the ground on an isolated frequency. With the NBA and NHL playoffs going on right now, I'd be absolutely shocked if there was not one controller in the country that was asked for a score update. Technically, that's verboten, but it doesn't really adversely affect safety - both pilots and controllers know when it's ok to be a bit loose with protocol and when to be strict about it.

congrats to the two of them. and also that captain was very understanding. totally cool gentleman. he even offered to have her come up to the cockpit (i am assuming he would have done that at the gate but still most airlines don't let you come within 3 feet of that door even when your parked at the gate and the front door open)

in regards to the aircraft, from what I remember she was seated in 25C so whatever aircraft she was in it had at least 25 rows.

I guess the question now is who else has come across a marriage proposal done in air or by someone working in the airline industry and used the background of an aviation world in their proposal?

I recall a charter I did about 20 years ago:

A young businessman chartered our Cheyenne 4, for a sightseeing trip over Niagara Falls for himself and his girlfriend.

Sipping champagne, enjoying the great view ... the sunset only made the atmosphere perfect. The young man popped out a ring and asked the young lady to marry him. Have to hand it to him .... it was perfect.

That is, until she said NO!

I just stared straight ahead, it was dead quiet, and it was all I could do to get back on the ground fast enough. Poor guy ... the whole ordeal cost him around C$ 1000.00.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!
