Abandoned/Underused Terminals Around The World

Mon Apr 24, 2006 11:45 pm

Which airports around the world have abandoned or underused terminals? And what's the story behind it being abandoned?

I can think of one, the old TWA terminal at JFK. AA bought out TWA and they already had their own terminal at JFK so they just packed up and left. However, it's being redeveloped into the new JetBlue terminal.

Dallas Love Field is another example of an underused airport terminal.

This is a great website about abandoned terminals in the USA:

With the opening of the new Terminal 2 (now 1) at HAM, the old Terminals 1 and 3 were left abandoned. T3 in the mean time has been torn down to make way for a new shopping plaza (finished next year), and the old terminal 1 is now available for parties, exhibits, and other similar stuff.

Well, LHR's Terminal Two will be abandoned in a few years (although to be demolished), following the opening of Heathrow's Terminal Five. So Heathrow will still have four terminals, 1, 3, 4 and 5... That's until Heathrow East happens!

The terminal E satellite at DFW. Abandoned and forlorn since Delta jumped ship.
BUT- there's a rumor that US/HP will move into it. That would be nice. I hate to see things wasted like that.

Terminal B in Zurich I have the impression is no longer in use! The managers saw too big for ZRH who is in over capacity and will turn the terminal into an exposition hall

Brest (BQT), Belarus as far as I know is pretty much a casualty of Chernobyl and has been closed I think since at least the end of the Soviet Union.

Those carriers operate from the main E-terminal. What AA737-823 was referring to is the small 9(?)-gate satellite that DL in the last years used solely for ASA flights.

Paris ORLY-SUD Terminal ...

One of the most modern Terminal in the World when it was opened in 1961.

Now largely udersused, well under its maximum capacity (unlike Orly-West).

E Satellite in DFW is currently unoccupied, but US/HP are rumored to be moving there shortly once jetways are reinstalled. Jetways were originally installed on the Satellite gates, but then removed entirely to allow space for ASAs operations. Once the terminal reassignments are complete, all-non AA domestic flights except UA will be in E. From what I have read UA refused to move to E because they just recently renovated the Red Carpet Club in B.

Continuing with the topic, RDU (AA side) and PIT Concourses C/D/E come to mind.

Correct, Terminal B is now known as the "Event Dock". Terminal B was phased out (temporarily?) when Terminal E was put into operation.

BRU A pier which was built thinking that the ever expanding SABENA would succeed in its ambitions. Unfortunately nowadays it's a rather underused terminal. Look by yourself: whenever I took the plane there it looked like this:

Yes, I think these are gates 14-20, a separate "finger" to the east side of the main terminal. When I was last there in November, the connecting hallway leading to those gates was being used as a storage place for carpeting, cabling, etc., for renovations being done to the security area for the main 12 gate pier (only 10 of which are in use).

http://www.springsgov.com/AirportPage.asp?PageID=4686

Once upon a time, COS was hoping to woo WN into the extra gates... but we all see how that turned out... WN chose DEN instead!

BED is actually overflowing with GA.

One airport with a new terminal and very little service is YKF (Kitchener, Region of Waterloo International), with only 3 flights a day to Detroit.

OXR, while the terminal is tiny, has served a lot more than the 6 flights or less per day to LAX that it is currently serving.

The terminal building is used for anything and everything, except a passenger terminal, even though it has like-new jetways that were used for only a few months while Mesa was flying regional service out of the airport pre 9/11

PHL has the old oversees terminal along Island avenue. It is sometimes used for charters i believe. I was also told once by an airport police officer that it had been condemned a few years back, but remains standing. It was used last September to proccess Huricane Katrina victims when the city of Philadelphia took a couple hundred or so in.

It was stupid to build the airport in the first place. It was Trudeau bullying the airlines to try to use his home city of Montreal instead of YYZ.

Maybe was it stupid to build the airport in first place. But i think that after having it built and running for years i think it's much more stupid to dismantle it than investing millions in YUL Trudeau international airport (isn't it ironic, naming an airport after the name of the biggest YMX fan... loll  Yeah sure ).

YUL cant be used passed a certain time at night until early morning. YMX could be used 24/24.

Not at all. In fact, Trudeau's airport plan had another superhub being built in Toronto at Pickering, though the expansion of Pearson has largely negated that need for now. The Government of Canada still owns that land and can build Toronto-Pickering if the need arises. There were a few rather sound reasons for Mirabel then that don't really make sense now. First, there was a real chance at having regular supersonic service plying the skies. In order to negate the effect the sound would have on the already existing residential neighborhood of Dorval, the government decided to buy up a whole bunch of land, enabling a massive buffer zone for sound. Additionally, at the time, lots of aircraft still had to use Montreal as a stop on the way to many North American cities. YUL was really threatened for capacity, as there is no way that you can expand an airport penned in by residential neighborhoods and autoroutes. Finally, there were plans at the time to put in a high speed rail link and an express highway that would connect Mirabel to both central Montreal and YUL very quickly. As the need for Mirabel faded, the decision was taken to not spend the money on those links.

Airside "D" was closed last year for demolition and replacement - not sure if it's actually been torn down yet.

Airside "B" was torn down (in 2003, I think) and AFAIK will not be replaced, at least not anytime soon. That was the Eastern terminal, and closed in 1991. I can remember looking out at it and still seeing Eastern posters through the windows a few years later.

Theoretically, TPA can be expanded further - the original plan allows for eventual construction of a second landside/airside set that would double the airport's terminal capacity.

I take it you mean 24/7. That is one of the main reasons Mirabel has been so attractive for freight ops.
