I heard a rumour many years ago that a British Charter airliner was taking off from Funchal's elevated runway and it appeared to the controller in the control tower that the airplane seemed like it fell off the end of the runway towards falling into the sea before climbing fast back into the sky. The controller reported the bad take off to the airline's chief pilot who replied it was he who was flying the plane and henceforth the airline would not be operating any further flights to Funchal as landing and takeoffs did not leave any room for error from the runway! The airline was either Britannia (UK) or Monarch. I have never been able to find if there was any truth to the story but neither Britannia (UK) nor Monarch seem to operate flights to Funchal.

The approach/take off from Funchal does require special licensed pilots to be flying the aircraft.

How do you mean?

Is there a certain degree of training to go through to be able to depart / land at FNC??

Certainly used to be a left hand seat landing only.

Since the runway was realigned and lengthened, don't know if that is still the case.

Going back quite a few years, I think it was Air Europe who, when using 757s damaged quite seriously one of these in a very heavy landing.

Also looking back, just about all UK flights had to make a tech stop on their return, often at Porto Santo (about 50km from FNC), to collect more fuel.
I don't like signatures...

Britannia/Thomsonfly have 3 flights a week this summer to Funchal from Gatwick, Manchester and Luton. However, as you say, Monarch have none.

There sure used to be one for the landing (I am not sure about the take-off). I don't know if that is still in place or not (the runway not is not very short, however the airport remains in a rather awkward place).
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!
