Ozark Meigs Flights

Tue Apr 25, 2006 8:59 am

In the Ozark Airlines wikipedia article, it says the airline briefly (2 years or so) served Meigs Field with DHC-6 Twin Otters from 1972-1974.

I don't think I have ever heard of this before. Apparently they served eight flights a day from SPI, and the service never really "took off" so to speak.

Did anyone ever fly on this route? Eight flights per day seems (at least now) like too many...one would think that 4 or 5 flights per day would have been more appropriate -- something like a 7am, 11am, 3pm, and a 7pm or something like that...

I remember Ozark out of Champaign/Urbana (or maybe Rantoul) nice local airline, major use of Douglas aircraft -- cannot remember now who bought them

Thats an interesting article. I do remember this fact. Ozark, which is Krazo spelled backwards(a little airline humor there) was the first regional airline to fly coast to coast. The the good ole days, you had Air West, Frontier, Mohawk, Allegheny, Southern, Lake Central, Trans Texas, Central, Piedmont, North Central and Ozark as regionals.

PHL-IND-STL-MLI.

Air Illinois flew the route, which prompted Ozark to start service as well, fearing that pax would desert Ozark's SPI-ORD flights in favor of close-in Meigs. Not sure of the exact frequecies, but SPI is the capital of Illinois, and of course Chicago is the economic hub of the state. There was (and maybe still is) a healthy level of traffic between the two during the weekdays.

Ozark bought the Twin Otters from a Carribean operator (don't remember which one). The seats were apparently so saturated with B.O. that when the temperature got warm in the summer, the stench inside the cabin was pretty noticeable. They could have gotten new seats, but the whole operation wasn't a winner for OZ, so they killed off the whole experiment and stuck with ORD.

Ozark's very first route was STL-DEC-MDW.

The routes out of BWI included: ORF-BWI-STL, BWI-CLE-STL and PIA-CMI-BWI-LGA. There *may* have been a weekend only PHL-BWI-STL flight for a brief period of time, but it doesn't ring a bell with me. Ozark moved from IAD to BWI to serve both DC and Baltimore shortly after deregulation. Later OZ got some DCA slots which were used exclusively for DCA-STL. The original DC area authority in the regulated days was PIA-CMI-IAD-LGA. I flew that many times visiting family in Northern Virginia. Ozark (and Southern) pulled right up to the lower level boarding gates and we disembarked from the built-in airstairs on the DC-9. Only once or twice do I recall using the people movers. This was LONG before any concourses were built at IAD.

There are quite a few Ozark route maps posted at:

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

IDK, but now that you mention it, they may have been swallowed up by Great Plains.
