I didn't read the entire article, but will say that composites are nothing new. A lot of people get caught up in the advertising and PR about new composites being used. A composite is nothing more than a combination of two materials that maintain their own characteristics.

Composites being used in the 787/A380/A350 are a special type of composites that are using new technologies. They are replacing aluminum alloys in large sections. This is the big change.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

They discuss CFRP research in the 70's and in particular lightning strike. Take a look at some of the other pages, there is a wealth of information on NASA research. Strength reduction over time is also discussed.
