Delta Flight ATL-LAX Full

Wed Apr 26, 2006 2:40 am

So I was thinking that Delta bookings would be sharply down as everyone was fearing the strike but I have a ticket to fly ATL-LAX on April 30 according to Delta's website the 767 going there is 100% full.

Anyone know if these flights are normally that full?

That flight along with the ATL-MCO flight have always had a large draw. I haven't noticed any lower than usual bookings on anything leaving JFK.

Yes, they are always packed to the gills. Even the redeye packs them in. As also said, the MCO flight is almost always packed and usually oversold.

If there was any book away, it would be significantly masked on the domestic system since DL pulled so much capacity there.

Keep in mind that the seat maps aren't an accurate indicator. For example, on the 767, bulkheads and a few other rows are blocked out for airport use only, and then you might not be able to see the seats reserved Medallion/full fares only.

Seeing as ATL is DL's home-based and LAX is (arguably) a DL hub, it does not surprise me one bit.

I bet that flight is usually full all year-round.

I think they added a 777 to that route as well (ATL-LAX)

Yeah, I believe it is the 10:40 am EST that flies a 777.

Don't trust the websites, I have had it where I looked on the Delta website and then looked at the true loads thanks to a family member, the Delta website seat map thing showed the flight was 100% full. Then when we looked at the actual load it had 50 seats left open.

Those flights don't surprise me as full, those are large connecting destinations. Also it seems that ATL-LAS is the same way, huge O&D and connecting market.

That is only temporary to keep the plane flying instead of sitting on the ground at ATL as just a backup aircraft. Soon the 777 will be off ATL-LAX again.

if you are seeing a flight with every seat assigned and yet there are still seats available to sell, there is obviously a fairly high no-show rate on that flight so overbooking is occurring. However 20% on a 763 (just a hypothetical aircraft since you didn't mention the type) is rather high. There are blocked seats but there is also a no-show factor and thus overbooking to compensate. Given the relatively low fares to many LAX destinations, demand should be strong and the no-show rate is probably fairly high. Typically lower fares and walkup fares generate the highest no-show rates.

DL has been operating a +80% load factor. An airline never wants to operate a L/F this high because somewhere in the system you are leaving pax at the gate. LAX is the worlds Top 5 O&D airport, full flights make sense in this market.

I flew DL (767) LAX-ATL several times in November 2005 and it was always full.

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure how to interpret that table - are those loads, capacities, load percentages, or what?

#s in brackets are the seating capacity numbers; other numbers are the number of seats available. Therefore, pretty much all of the listed flights have seats available in both cabins except for DL1126 which is oversold by 9 in Y

i flew on a 777 LAX-ATL back in march. It was a redeye flight. The gate agent said that it was one of the last times the 777 would be on that route. I was lucky to be on it.
Also, the flight was oversold by about 50 people. If the china southern flight had been ontime, all those standby pax would have been spending the night in LAX for the morning 764 flight back to ATL

The first # after the aircraft number (ie 757) is the first class available seats, followed by (#) which is the capacity. The second is coach seats available, followed by (#) which is also capacity.

Bummer, I tried rather hard to get on the 777 flight but it just did not work for the company travel. Instead I am on flight 263.

The 764 is still a great aircraft. No PTVs though, unless you are in First.
