Yes, that is true:

"The order was included last week on the Boeing Orders & Deliveries Web site, attributed to an unidentified customer. Today’s announcement coincides with the second anniversary of Boeing’s launch of the 787 program."

That's what the press release from Boeing says...

Congrats to both Boeing and Air Pacific. Let's hear something from LY and Aeroflot on their decisions. Does anyone remember Boeing's ambitious sales targets, i.e target at EIS??????

cheers

Indeed very interesting. Several people at A.net predicted it was Air Pacific. We are getting good at this. Maybe Boeing would hire us as their market analysts.  Smile

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/news/2006/q2/060425a_nr.html

They are 789's and will replace the current 744's. Deliveries to start in 2011.
Congrats Boeing and FJ

Good decision.

I hope this will replace their 767. It would be time for it to retire.

IIRC the 744's were on lease from SQ. Will they go back to SQ?

Right, "The new Dreamliners will eventually replace two Boeing 747-400s and one 767-300ER." This should put to rest doubts that aircraft of different size compete with each other for the airlines' dollars.

Would FJ start SFO service with the 787? I would think the 744 would be overkill, but the 787 would be a nice size to serve the SFO-Fiji route; they'd also have the route to themselves, as no one else flies it.

What I find interesting about this order is the 787's market share in Oceania. AirNZ, Qantas, Jetstar and now Air Pacific. The only remaining operator in the region with a need for such a airframe would be Air Tahiti Nui. Boeing's almost secured an entire region with the model. Before launch!

Indeed. Either Boeing's sales team is enjoying entirely too much Southern sun (  Wink ), or this aircraft definitely fits into these airlines' route systems flawlessly.

Besides Air Tahiti Nui, as you already mentioned, there are the continuous rumors that the Virgin group is looking to expand Virgin Blue internationally. But if this happens, doesn't the 787 seem like another perfect fit for such an operation? . . .

P.S. - Don't forget Africa as well. So far we have RAM, Ethiopian and Kenya. And Seychelles (do they count as 'Africa' or not?) is leasing 2 from ILFC. . .

Guys I think your forgetting an important point here, QF owns the controlling shares of FJ. We all knew QF had a huge bloomin' onion deal with the 787 even though it is for subsidiary JQ, so if QF thought the B789 was going to fit with JQ, why not FJ? Makes sense.

Interesting. This would mark the third occasion that I can recall that SRB/Virgin have looked at the 777. The closest they ever came, of course, was the first time when they actually acquired options.

We'll see what the future holds. Somehow, I see 787-9/-10's over the 777 if this does indeed go forward.

I suppose LAX will get daily then as it is currently served by 744's 4x weekly? Could the new 787 see a direct YVR-NAN in place of the NAN-HNL-YVR? Hopefully FJ will anounce a new long-haul destination with it's new 787's. I'm hoping for SFO or HKG, although I would like NZ to start NAN-SFO. Will we be seeing flat beds in business class and AVOD in economy? What about a premium economy class?

This is great news. Another for the Boeing order books.

Sorry if I'm a bit out of the loop as I usually don't follow Air Pacific, but didn't they have some A330s on order a while back? I hope I'm not just imagining things but I recall even seeing some artist photos of the aircraft and everything.

FJ have publically stated the intention of the additional widebody aircraft is to increase frequencies on existing routes and then open up new destinations- don't think HKG was even contemplated, but look out for KIX & ICN a few years down the road.

The 744's are too big for the LAX-NAN-SYD runs (sometimes full flights at low yields on the Australian routes), however, the SQ lease rates were very generous as these 2 aircraft had been leased to defunct Ansett. If you look at FJ's schedule, the 744's have very low utilization rates: 3 LAX trips/week (4 in summer), a daily SYD, and a once weekly AKL with one aircraft doing most of the flying in a week (Thursday is maintenance aircraft swap over day).

The A330 order was cancelled a long while ago while the 763's future has been in doubt for some time (still not in the new livery).

How many orders do A350 and B787 now have this year? And where can I find this info? Airbus doesn't seem to list current-year orders, only all orders cumulatively.

Look at the two Wikipedia pages. You should be able to get all the info there. For the 787, you can also use Boeing's orders website.

Joni, to see how many A350s Airbus have booked firm go to this link;

http://www.airbus.com/en/corporate/orders_and_deliveries/#

Scroll down and open the spreadsheet. Year to date they list 13 but they only update the site once a month whereas Boeing update their site each week. So some Airbus firm orders are yet to appear. Boeings link is below;

Remember, both only have was id booked firm, not what is commited to. I suggest Hamlet69s excellent 2006 Orders thread on this site to see which commitments still need to be firmed

Excellent choice by Air Pacific! ... regardless of the QF shareholding, it makes sense for them to go with the 787 due to the fact that QF and NZ will have major maintenance bases for the aircraft. Additionally, the more operators in the region makes the availability of parts better for all as well, and therefore lower costs.

Now let's hope they all select Trent engines!

I can't link directly to the spreadsheet. 13 comes from 9 x A350 for AY and 2 x A358 & 2 x A359 for ILFC. Your 13 sir.

When you open the spreadsheet, it defaults to all Airbus orders ever received by Airbus. At the bottom of the spreadsheet, use the tabs for the windows, 2 x tabs to the left of your screen and it will take you to a window with year to date sales only, that is where the 13 are listed.

Quoting Kaitak744 (Reply 9):
All that is left is Air Tahiti Nui

3 reasons why I do not see them operating the 787 in the foreseenable future:
1. They just got brand new 343s (or will get? can't remember...)
2. (correct me if I'm wrong) Their 340s are maintained at CDG by AF, one reason for this is that they are using the long stopover in CDG to do so, and reason # 2 is that AF also has 340s. And, as AF is not expected to get 787s in the foreseenable future, there will not be any competent staff to do the necessary maintenance on the 787s there.
3. If they ever need to expand, as they have a small fleet, it should be more relevant for them to get either additional second-hand 343s, or new 332s/333s or perhaps 350s for obvious fleet commonality reasons which should be key in such a small airline.

Good luck getting them off the Airbus horse. Didnt they jus commit to more 340's?

They need to start making some money first. Then get of the Airbus horse, then they would buy the 787.

Isn't Air Tahiti Nui on the verge of collapse?
If it ain't Boeing (or Embraer ;-)) I ain't Going!

As Qantas owns the majority of this airline, this situation is the same as Continental/Copa.

Fleet decisions by the owner.  Smile

How can you be so sure they are not expected to get the 787? Do you work for AF or something? I really think AF/KLM is highly interested in the 787, especially the 10 variant. I would bet money on this.

Also, just because the parent airline does not fly certain model aircraft does not necessarily mean their maintenance group will not service those planes. It's an outsourcing business and if you dont have the "know-how" to do the job you will lose out.
Airbus or Boeing - it's all good to me!
