Finnair And Their DC-10s

Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:40 pm

Hello everyone!

I was thinking lately about AY's transition from DC-10s to MD-11s and decided to ask on the "professional" forum. I know that MD-11s started doing passenger service with AY in 1990 as a DC-10 replacement. However they weren't replaced that fast and DC-10s operated with AY until the second half of 1990s, if I'm not mistaken. How did the DC-10/MD-11 route structure look like when both types were in service? Also, I assume that once the pilots transferred to the MD-11 they weren't flying DC-10s anymore. Were there specific routes for each of these aircraft types?

Interesting question. I remember flying a Finnair MD11 to Kennedy in 1993 and there were two DC10s parked, one of them all white with no markings. I think they were still used for charters and substitutions for a while, but basically replaced like-for-like.

When I first came to the United States in 1993, I flew AY's DC-10 HEL-JFK. It was only years later when I got into aviation and found out that MD-11 entered service with AY almost 3 years prior to that. Now since you told me that you flew on MD-11 to JFK in 1993, I got even more curious.

DC-10 is such a beautiful plane. I flew AY DC-10 once, HEL-SEA-HEL in 1980s, very exiting for a young guy. AY flew HEL-SEA-LAX that time.

Several members of my family flew SEA-HEL-SEA on AY during the 70s and 80s. I can still vaguely recall seeing an AY DC-10 at SEA when we picked my grandmother up after she returned to SEA...one of my earliest memories of the airport!

It might well be so that I would not be on this forum today if I hadn't flown AY's DC-10s HEL-BKK-SIN and LAX-HEL as a 9-year-old boy in Nov 1988. It was then when I really got interested in airplanes and flying... Wink

I think this is the DC10 I flew on in 1988 to Yugoslavia..I believe it was the one chartered by JAT from Finnair. Can anyone decipher whether this craft was that one ?

Michael, the aircraft leased to JAT was OH-LHA which flew for JAT between April 16th 1987 and October 31st 1988. BTW, the other three ex Finnair DC-10s are still alive OH-LHB and N345HC are with Omni International while OH-LHE is a freighter with Gemini.

Hi!

Just to add a "bit of salt" to this topic, AY used once a while their DC-10's ( and latter MD11's ) to fly to FAO, transporting very excited finnish tourists from the white scenery of Finland to the beautifull sunny beaches of Algarve/Portugal!!!

I flew OH-LHB between HEL-PEK on 29.03.1994, and PEK-HEL on 11.04.1994. So the DC-10 was still used to PEK in the spring of '94. LHB had 10-abreast seating and very narrow pitch!

SFO was their latest destination at the west coast, the route didn't live long, unfortunately.

AY has every now and then used DC-10 and MD-11 on intra-Europe routes , I have flown MD-11 HEL-STN early 1990s when Finns could easily shop in London with their strong currency, so different now...

MD-11 is occasionally used in domestic traffic too, carrying skiing tourists to Finnish Lapland, like last winter.
