I assume that AA already flies this route and per the bilateral, up to three U.S. carriers can serve this city pair. Is there a pending application for the third slot or is there someone else already flying CHI-CUN Mark?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

So, the DOT has finally decided on one of the intensively competed for US-CUN routes. How many months have those applications been pending now, 4?

Good to hear the DOT finally start acting on some of the contested Mexico routes.

I cant wait to see whom gets the JFK-CUN, and the hotly contested LAX-SJD route.

Or if in the unlikely chance USA 3000 get the authority, EWR-CUN. Any word on when a decision will be made?

I was hoping for UAL to get ORD-CUN as well as Jetblue to get JFK-CUN. Frontier has plenty of CUN presence, good decision.

Surprised they are just now flying this, I take it United is somewhat behind the pack in CUN?

That should go to UA too, if committment to a market means anything to the DOT

Under the 2 carrier rule, AA and TZ had the rights. UA just slotted in as the third.

It is good to see that UA got the route, but unfortunately they will probably only serve CUN on Saturdays. But I personally doubt that any new airline was going to off nonstop daily service between ORD and CUN. But maybe UA will.

Anything is possible, but given the DOT's notorious even-handedness, I would raise an eyebrow if UA got both authorities.

And I would think Delta would yell.

Agreed. Asian expansion is highest on United's priorities list right now. Europe and Latin America lag behind in focus for UA. Because of this, other carriers have seized the lead in the Mexican/Caribbean/South American market, like AA and CO, although to be fair United does not have a hub that would be a good gateway to these location (unlike AA at DFW and CO at IAH).

I was disappointed that I could not take ORD-CUN over DEN-CUN last March. I look forward to picking this up in the near future. Way to go UA/TED!

That's a good point, but what is their excuse at LAX? Not trying to knock UA as I've had lots of good experiences with them, but they are the only legacy to have a true hub at LAX, but they didn't really start Mexico flights until the past few years. In the meantime, AS has been able to build up the largest Mexico operation out of LAX - why wasn't UA in on some of that action until now? Same with SFO - why did they just recently start flights from SFO to Mexico.

That said, they have finally added some Saturday flights from IAD and ORD to the Caribbean, so they're at least seeing some opportunity. But I wonder why they couldn't add some RJ frequencies to smaller cities and put the 319/320 on more Caribbean and Mexico routes (especially from IAD and LAX)?

Looks like daily Ted service and Sat and Sun mainline, and even twice daily Ted during high season. http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.c...m?documentid=396239&docketid=23496

In the last three years, we have seen quite a bit of expansion by United in the Caribbean, so I imagine it will increase. They have started service to SXM, Montego Bay, three or four new Mexican destinations, Aruba, Bermuda, Punta Cana, and St. Lucia. I hope this expansion will continue.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on in Chicago headquarters, but UA should definitely try to capitalize on their hub at LAX. Los Angeles probably has one of the top five largest Latin American communities in the U.S., so there is a huge market for Mexican/Latin American flights. I'm sure United realizes this, but they should try to take advantage of their LAX hub to seize this demand and market.

Until United is in a position to order and receive new aircraft, any major expansion will result only from optimizing its schedule. Many of the new Caribbean routes were Winter seasonal flights. They'll end soon and the aircraft will be shifted to locations to optimize Summer flying. There are many ideal routes from many of its hubs just waiting for United to get new aircraft.

Who cares what Delta would say. What commitment have they shown to the LAX market? They don't even pay for their terminal at this point. If United doesn't get it (which they should), then Frontier should. Then again, there is currently only one US airline on the route (Alaska), since ATA gave up their authority, so there will be two to go out.
