Quoting EddieDude (Reply 1):
I assume that AA already flies this route and per the bilateral, up to three U.S. carriers can serve this city pair. Is there a pending application for the third slot or is there someone else already flying CHI-CUN Mark?
Quoting Laxintl (Reply 7):
hotly contested LAX-SJD route.
Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 10):
Surprised they are just now flying this, I take it United is somewhat behind the pack in CUN?
Quoting N1120A (Reply 13):
That should go to UA too, if committment to a market means anything to the DOT
Quoting RwSEA (Reply 12):
And in Mexico and the Caribbean in general.
Quoting UAL#1fan (Reply 16):
Agreed. Asian expansion is highest on United's priorities list right now. Europe and Latin America lag behind in focus for UA. Because of this, other carriers have seized the lead in the Mexican/Caribbean/South American market, like AA and CO, although to be fair United does not have a hub that would be a good gateway to these location (unlike AA at DFW and CO at IAH).
Quoting RoseFlyer (Reply 14):
It is good to see that UA got the route, but unfortunately they will probably only serve CUN on Saturdays. But I personally doubt that any new airline was going to off nonstop daily service between ORD and CUN. But maybe UA will.
Quoting RwSEA (Reply 19):
they have finally added some Saturday flights from IAD and ORD to the Caribbean, so they're at least seeing some opportunity.
Quoting RwSEA (Reply 19):
That's a good point, but what is their excuse at LAX? Not trying to knock UA as I've had lots of good experiences with them, but they are the only legacy to have a true hub at LAX, but they didn't really start Mexico flights until the past few years.
Quoting Mariner (Reply 15):
Anything is possible, but given the DOT's notorious even-handedness, I would raise an eyebrow if UA got both authorities.
And I would think Delta would yell.
