ATTENTION: IT'S Qantas!

Mon Jun 12, 2000 3:29 pm

I know that this post may seem a bit trivial, but over the past few days there has been several posts regarding Qantas. And on most occasions, Qantas has been spelt wrong. I don't know if it's just me but when people spell the name of Australia's national airline as Quantas, it annoys me. For the (hopefully) last time, it is QANTAS, not Quantas. It is an acronym, and stands for

Queensland
And
Northern
Territory
Air
Service

Sorry for the rather trivial nature of this post.

Good on you!! I agree totally with your comments!! I was thinking of starting my own revenge campaign....see what people say when we start spelling airlines.....as Cathy Specific, KLN, Looftanza, Suissair, Dellta, You-night-ed etc etc etc!!

So, be warned all those that insist on putting the U in Qantas, because you may soon see your favourite airline spelt a little differently!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha (imagine an evil cackle like the "Count" from Sesame Street)

Cheers!

good call!
but the last 'A' in QANTAS stands for Aerial not Air! hehehe : - )

And The S stands for Services and not Service.

I made the same mistake a few days ago and practically got attacked. Sheesh!! I just spelled it the way it's pronounced. The u seemed appropriate. It's not the end of the world though. Besides, you know what someone is referring to when they say "QUANTAS" so what's the problem? As long as I get the main points of the post, i'm not going to bitch because one letter is misplaced, added or omitted. The last line of your post sums it up, this is quite trivial.

Good one, mate! I guess the main reason Qantas is so misspelled is that a lot of people will tend to put the "u" after any "q" they see or write down. This is prevalent among English speakers, as the letter "q" is followed by the "u" in most words in the English language!

You have to understand that we Aussies get real pissed off when people continually mispell Quantas (oops did I do that), especially when they are an aviation enthusiast. In fact, it is not even Qantas....but QANTAS, as it is an acronym, although people do refer to it as a word.

It is like me saying Las Angeles or New Yawk. Just good grammar I suppose.

I will have to give you a B- in English for this semester, sorry

The only word which I don't care if you mispell is Ansett, or Ensutt (seeing that it is Kiwi owned now, you should get my point).

Samurai 777....good point....the only word in the English language in which a "u" doesn't follow a "q" is Qatar, but in effect this is Arabic so it doesn't really count

No it isn't. The misspelling of an airline's name has nothing to do with good or bad grammar. Not exactly textbook material
Samurai 777 you actually proved my point. If we spelled quantas the way we did, we are actually using correct grammar. If you didn't know it was an acroynm (which a lot of people don't) then spelling it qantas would seem irregular.

So, how is it officially pronounced? Is it actually pronounced KWANTUS, or is it pronounced KAWNTUS?
