How Long To Build The DTW Mcnamara Terminal?

Tue May 02, 2006 5:34 am

I was just curious as to how long it took to build the McNamara terminal. It seemed like a long time but am not sure. I must say that it is one of the more nicer terminals...1000% improvement over the old crowded terminal that was in operation.  Smile

The groundworks for it were laid in December of 1996, and the terminal pened on 2/24/02.

Depends on what aspect you look at it from.

There was an effort by the Wayne County back in the late 80's early 90's to build a new terminal. They even had a design competition that Bechtel had won. The initial design came in at around $1 Bil +. NW was not in a good financial position at that time so the project was put on hold.

In '96 NW and the County came to an agreement that NW would manage the project; design, construction, and finances.

In late '96 the NW Project Team was organized and design work was started with SmithGroup, aka SHG being the terminal designer. In about summer of '98 civil work was started. Actual terminal work did not start until Feb '99. Work was completed in early 2002 and went online 24FEB02.

The original scheduled opening date was for December '01 but do to several factors, including Sep 11th it was pushed back to Feb '02.

So to answer your question, the actual terminal construction took about 34 months.

Between 1998 and 2002 my dad worked on the NW people mover which runs along the top of the terminal. In December 2001 as a Christmas present he was given an ornament of the exact shuttle, complete with NW logos and all.

The initial portion of the new terminal involved the new ATC tower and south access roadway from Eureka Rd. which were built in the early '90s. When the new terminal plans were put on hold, they still built the new tower, CFR station, and south access road in about 1992. The roadway ended in the middle of the field until it was extended to the north and connected to the existing terminals in 2002 for the opening of the Worldgateway.
