Virgin America's Story

Thu May 04, 2006 10:01 pm

A lot of hype is rising regarding Virgin America. I know very little of the airline and I was wondering if people could share their opinion on the "new" airline. I know it's going to be based out of SFO and fly an all A320 fleet. When do they expect to have the inaugural flight? Which destinations are they going to serve? What are its predictions/business plan in an already saturated market? How do they intend to deal with B6, WN, F6, and the likes? What do they intend to do differently?

Someone just posted the picture of the first aircraft on a.net. As far as I know they will be serving major markets like NY, LA, SEA, etc.

They have also got a flying A319 at XFW at the moment - and all I can say is, the cabin is very funky/psychodelic.

I saw the picture this morning so I looked at their website. Do you think they'll fly DFW with WN at nearby DAL? I would like to see some more options and competition here!

Boy, would that be nice or what?  Wink
Dallas is a major market. I wonder what that would mean in terms of AA, WN, and the Wright Amendment...  box

I think Virgin America should grow slow.

Some of the beginning routes might look somewhat like this:

SFO-JFK-3X
SFO-EWR-2X
SFO-MCO-2X
SFO-IAD-3X
SFO-PHL-1X
SFO-IAH-2X
SFO-PIT-1X
SFO-SEA-2X
SFO-MIA-2X
SFO-ORD-2X
SFO-DEN-2X
SFO-RDU-1X

This is just a scenario if you will!

I think the first thing is they need to get a certificate to actually fly! New plane paying lease rates and is sitting on the ground! Sound business plan if you ask me.

Recently I had some "financiers" for commercial aircraft, waiting for a flight at my gate, and a conversation ensued. This topic came up, and they said that Virgin America has a deal with Airbus that the contracts have a contingency that Virgin America will recieve aircraft for proving their suitability to fly etc and for obraining their certificate, and that payment for any of this is contingent upon them receiving a certificate. If not, the aircraft are to be returned.

Has there been any rumors as to a second or third base/focus city? Or, are they planning a hub 'n spoke type of operation @ SFO?

I am assuming this is a continuing press by Sir Richard Branson to rule the airline world. If it's for the good of the flying public and his service matches somebody like JetBlue I am all for it.

Sorry for lack of acronyms, I have been a squid for 12 years and have only been studiously looking over the posts over the last few weeks and just signed up.
