Registration For An Old ATA 727

Fri May 05, 2006 5:35 am

I came across a picture of an ATA 727 from 1995 that i flew on and i was wondering if anyone has the registration # and any info. on if it is still in service with another airline. The details that i can remember in which may make it easier to track down was that it was an ex-USAir 727. The only thing that was different was the USAir name was taken off and small "ATA" black letters were slapped on toward the front of the plane. I don't have a scanner so i cannot post the picture.

You said you flew on it -- do you remember the exact date and what two cities you flew between?

The Bureau of Transportation keeps detailed on-time statistics (that give individual tail numbers) going back to 1995. If you can provide a date and the route you flew - I may be able to find it it.

I flew from MDW-PHX late December...just before new years i believe. I think the flight left at 9:55pm from MDW. I think i left January 3 or 4th because i flew on a 757 but the 727 in old US colors was at the next gate.

Looks like TZ didn't start reporting data to BTS until 2003, so their 1995 flights aren't on the BTS site.

ATA operated a few 727-2B7/Adv aircraft, all of which were initially ordered by USAir. These included N760AT, N762AT, and N770AT. It's possible that there were some others but those are the only three of which we have photos in the db. The flight you took might have been one of these although if the aircraft was a new acquisition, it might have still been flying under the old USAir registration.

I did a search through the database and didn't find any ATA 727s in USAir colors so it sounds like you've got a fairly rare photo on your hands. It might be worth scanning when you have a chance.

IF ATA didn;t start reporting to the BTS until 2003, then my idea won't work, but for future reference here'show you can go back and look up an old tail number.

Go to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website. Scroll down to the Detailed Statistics section and click on Departure Statistics.

When the next page comes up, make sure the box for "Scheduled Departure Time" is checked, then continue to the next page.

When that page comes up, choose the desired airport, then continue to the next page.

When the next page comes up, choose your airline and enter a date range then continue.

The next page that comes up will show you every flight operated by that airline at that airport for the date(s) in question.

You can also do the above process, except this time choose "Destination Airport" instead of Origin Airport and choose your airport/airline and the date(s) you want to look for -- and that will show you all the airline's flights that arrived at a certain airport on a certain date.

I hope that kind of made sense.

I just looked it up and it seems that there were 16 727's operated by ATA that were directly acquired from USAir, so it's probably one of them. Which one is the hard part.

If you are interested, it is CN's:

Most if not all of the UsAir to ATA 727s have gone on to ER, Astar Air Cargo operating for DHL.

They are:

N760AT 727-2B7
N762AT 727-2B7

N763AT 727-264
N764AT 727-264
N765AT 727-264

N770AT 727-2B7

N785AT 727-214
N786AT 727-214
N788AT 727-214

N784AT 727-247 First delivered to Western, then US, then ATA, now ER as N793DH

This is the complete list of airplanes that eventually ended up at ER. I think this is most of the ATA birds though. Hope it helps.

Ok...i was not able to find a scanner to upload these pics. so i took a picture of the pictures *lol* They are not the best shots but i think you could clearly see the USAir colors with the small bold faced "ATA" toward the front end of the fuselage. Has annyone else ever seen this plane? cheers.
