Orascom's ventures are going ahead. SunAir began operations in April with a single ATR72. Their sole scheduled service is Cairo - AlGouna which is served on a twice weekly basis (Orascom built and own the resort of Al-Gouna
so the route is no surprise). Besides that route, they operate regular charter flights within Egypt. Tarek Amer, Chairman of SunAir, stated in an interview “We are approaching the Mediterranean because now there’s a huge demand for charter flights. If there’s a need for more passenger flights, then I’ll open that as well. I have been in the aviation industry for 20 years working as an engineer and commercial consultant for airlines. I have close contact with tour operators and they keep telling me they need more flights in the Mediterranean.”
. During the summer season SunAir is planning to fly routes between uncommon and underserved locations such as Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Egypt. The company will recieve their second ATR72 in June and will expand their fleet to four in 2007.
As for Koral Blue (a charter airline), the initial plan was to start operations in May with 2 wet leased B733s from Tunisian Karthago Airline, however the airline's management were not happy about starting operations with aircraft with substandard interiors and limited range. As a result the start up as been postponed until November when the airline recieve 2 180-seater A320s. Their initial target market will be between Sharm El Sheikh and "distant European hubs" (they mentioned Great Britain and Poland). I spoke to a guy I know last week who just got a job with them and he said the events in Dahab shouldn't have an effect on the start up and that tourist numbers should be back to normal by June.
