Korean 744 Cargo Without Freight-door, Why?

After being returned from lease to Air India this Korean Air 744 has adopted Cargo titles - but clearly has not been converted to a freighter. Is it a Xiamen to be converted there? If so, why has it been painted before conversion? That seems like a waste of money.

Hi NA,

If you can open up the Large version of the picture, you can clearly see that this aircraft has been converted to -400F. You can see at the aft the A/C designation, 747-400F. Also, if you look closer, the main-deck windows has been covered from the inside of the plane. It is darker than those on the upper deck. It's just a matter of covering the windows at extra cost, which probably isn't worth the money..

Hope that helps..

But still, its clearly to see it got no freight-door yet, has not been converted yet. HL7606 has been handed back by Air India in March, so I assume its now being converted. I just find it odd, that it got a full fresh KE-livery and then they cut up the aircraft in the rear a few weeks later.

Could they have placed the cargo door on the other side of the plane? I know its usually, if not always, on the right side, but never say never.
Its all about supply and demand...

in this case ill say never...

The only certified position for a SCD on the 747 is on the left.

But this one is really strange... why would they paint it up in Cargo colors, have the doors sealed and windows at least partially plated... but no SCD??? If its due for conversion why paint it fully? Confuseded i is...
Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Hmm.. that's one good point as far as conversion goes.. My bad for judging it too quickly.. I wonder how they'll make loadings and unloadings...

I, for now, am also confused..

MaartenV,

I think you're mixed up with Pax version of the plane.. A Pax 747 has its cargo doors on starboard, but as NorthStarDC4m said, the certified position for a 747 SCD is on port...

Look at the letters A and I in the word "AIR", they look as if they go over the opening of the door and I just can't seem to see the line of the door and the aircraft. It's just something I noticed so don't go taking my head off if I'm wrong.

Guys the pic is taken in Xiamen, thats where they convert them so this has just arrived for freighter conversion. I assume after returning from AI KE painted the plane and then sent it for conversion.... not sure why they did not do it later or have Xiamen do it.

Behind this plane you can see two other 744's waiting for conversion, one in SAA colours and one all white.

Bingo. According to the MEG database, she's in for a conversion to add the door, remove interior, install pallet rollers, re-inforce the belly, and install a (drumroll please) SCD!

Tell him what he's won Johnny!! "A brand new added sense of respect!" Big grin
It only takes five years to go from rumor to standard operating procedure.
