TK At Sabhia Gocken

How are Turkish's new flights at Sabhia Gocken (Istanbul) going. Are they getting good loads and yields? What routes do they presently operate from there. I know they will start Hanover flights soon?

I wasn't expecting that much of a boom but the Sabiha Gökçen(SAW) flights of THY are really a blast.

SAW is the secondary airport of Ýstanbul and was realy sloW after it was first built.After the rise of the low coast market in Turkey,SAW is rediscovered with certain advantages to both the company and the passengers.

First Ýstanbul is a very big city and the Airport is at the one end of the city and many people has to drive a long distance to Yeþilköy to board the planes.The traffic is so heavy so for example driving directly to Ankara from the Asia side of Ýstanbul is really quicker to fly Ankara from IST.

TK made great discounts from the flights originating from SAW,add the cost of taxi(or fuel cost to drive IST) add the parking lot fees(it is a great cost too her(SAW parking lots are free) and many people choose that airport.

I know the international routes willl be introduced soon from there but I don't know the exact dates.THY has already plans for future extension of its facilities.

The only bad thing for myself is I live next to IST airport here but I have to drive almost 1:30 hrs to and back for a flight which will take almost 1 hour in and out total.But as long as my company earns from this I am happy to take this difficulty.Best Regards.WING

I recently saw a traffic and revenue report for SAW.

While in general terms the traffic at SAW started slow, it has definitely improved. Domestic fares and yields at SAW versus IST tend to be lower as SAW is located on the Asian side of the Istanbul which is predominately residential with Istanbuls business community located primarily on the European side. Also SAW flights obviously lacks the connectivity with the large TK international network.

Ultimately however SAW operations will continue to grow as it offers a very convenient option for a very large portion of Istanbuls population. In addition the lack of significant growth capacity and slot issues at IST also make SAW attractive for airlines.
