Connecting In SIN With SQ

Sat May 06, 2006 11:58 pm

In October I shall be travelling to Australia from Manchester to Brisbane via Singapore on Singapore Airlines SQ. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how it is connecting in SIN and what the procedures are? My flight will arrive SIN a 6.10am and depart SIN for BNE at 9.55am. On my return leg from SIN to MAN i have a stop in ZRH. Also how does this occur? Are all passengers disembarked and MAN passengers reboard an hour after arrival into ZRH?
Many Thanks in Advance

First of all, may I congratulate you on your choice of airline. Competition is rife in the North England -> Australasia market and you have obviously used wisdom in choosing Singapore Airlines Limited.

Your bags should be checked through to Brisbane at Manchester Terminal 2. This means that in Singapore, all you need to do is to savour the experience of the world's best airport - Singapore Changi. Here's a list of suggested activities:

Pick up a gift for yourself or your loved ones.
Surf the Internet for free at over 200 Internet-ready terminals.
Stay abreast with the latest updates on World News and Sports at the Skyplex Entertainment Centre.
Stroll through our gardens and take a breather from the hustle and bustle of travel.
Chill out and enjoy live performances in the evening at the contemporary Nexus Lounge.
Pamper yourself with great buys from our shopping mall.
Savour the unique taste of local, Asian and international cuisine at over 60 F & B outlets.
Enjoy the nostalgic lounge music performed by our talented musicians at our music bar lounges in the evenings.
Stretch your muscles at our fully-equipped air-conditioned gym and finish off with an invigorating shower.
Catch forty winks at the napping suites available at the lounges.

More information at the Changi Airport Guide

With regards to your SQ345 flight - I am unsure and will leave that for others.

Hi
Connecting in SIn is probably one of the easiest and the most present things to do. Its a wonderful airport. You will land and the moment you get out from the gate you will see signs pointing where to go such as "arrival" "immigration" and "baggage claims".

Getting around is fairly easy, but since hte airport is so large, you have to keep walking in the direction of the last sign you see. Though you hardly have to walk because they have those walking cause ways all over.

I cant tell you anything about ZRH. Let me knwo if you need anymore help.

Wow, Thanks for all your help. Will there be another area o check in for the BNE flight or since my baggage will be cleared through i take it i shall recieve my boarding pass for my BNE flight in MAN when i check in. This is my first trip to Australia and SIN. After travelling alone to the USA to IAD,PHL & MCO i hope my first long haul flight non-US is a good one, although after travelling Int. at the age of 16. I will be going to AUS with my father. I also checked Emiates via DXB althought the DXB to BNE flight includes a stop at SIN and it wasnt much more to travel direct to SIN then onto BNE.
Thanks Again

I have transitted SIN in the past, and it is indeed a wonderful airport. Plenty to do and it's very difficult to get lost, even if you have a knack for it! I'm sure ZRH will be just the same - airlines and airports are usually very good at making sure you know where to be and when - no-one likes lost/late pax!!

EDIT: SQ is also a wonderful airline, I'm sure you will enjoy the flights, as I have the few times I've had the opportunity to fly with them! Good choice!!

If I had to live in an airport, it would be SIN. I often have 20 hour connections there and look forward to them. Generally I head into town, but I have stayed in the airport that long and have never been bored. SIN is just a great hassle-free airport with lots to do.

One kind of weird thing with SIN is that you clear security at the gate itself. They might even scan you all at the gate upon arrival before letting you into the gate concourses. When you get to you BNE gate they will put you back through the scanning process. As has been said the shopping is incredible if that is your cup of tea. Lots of things to see and do. I had about three hours there before my flight and it wasn't enough to see everything.

When I last flew SQ when we were about to land into SIN they put on the screens which gate some departures were going from and where you were going to be parked. For example aircraft lands and parks at F24 then your connecting flight departs from F26 - then you can judge how far you have to go for your next flight, not sure if they'll do that for 3 hour break but worth knowing incase you're late etc

Transiting in SIN is nothing like international travel to the United States. The US is one of the strictest countries in the world for how they deal with international passengers in order to not let anyone in the country that isn't allowed. With very few exceptions all people landing in the United States on an international flight must clear customs and immigration even if they are connecting to another international flight.

In Singapore it is just like a domestic connection. You exit the plane and freely can walk about the terminal. As pointed out by others you can go shopping at the excellent duty free shopping area. The stores are all from high quality brands and are expensive. You also can enjoy the other amenities that the airport has.

You then can go directly to your gate. There is no immigration or check in again. You should already have your boarding pass to BNE from your original check in, but there are transfer desks if you need assistance. You then enter into the gate lounge. Each gate has its own security and holding room. Make sure you don't go to your gate too early because you will sort of be stuck there and have nothing to do since you have to clear security and they usually take your boarding pass as you enter. Gates only open a little before boarding though and you should have plenty of time.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Sure
Legroom : i would say pretty decnt on their 777's in Y (78-80%) and quite tight on the 744's (60-65%).

F/A's : 100% excellent.

Food : 90%.. pretty good!

Entertainment : i would say 100% would like to give Kris World a 110%.. but cant..

cheers

I've never flown SQ in Y, but in C and F the service, food, and IFE are among the very best in the world. The current generation of C seats are mediocre, but new seats will be introduced later this year when the B777-300ER and the WhaleJet enter service.

In economy, overall, definitely one of the best, although there isn't too much variation between the major world carriers when it comes to economy anyway. Overall, thanks to excellent service, nice food and simply brilliant IFE I would have to give them 8 or 9 out of 10.

SQ have only 5 of them and they are operated only to CGK, LAX, and EWR from SIN. An SQ flyer, however frequent, based in the UK would never have occasion to fly on the A340-500 unless going around the world or to CGK.

Where does he state that he is a Guru? Isnt the info he provided enough already? I would doubt he is anything more than a true Singaporeian.. you have to have been there to see how everyone from the guy driving you in the taxi, to the guy driving the ferrari is so supportive of their airline. NEVER have i seen such spirit before.

As pointed out by other and I am taking the liberty to summarise:

- You will receive your MAN-SIN and SIN-BNE boarding passes at Manchester Airport with seat assignments on both sectors
- Your checked baggage will be tagged all the way to Brisbane
- When descending into SIN, your IFE screen should show the gate that your MAN-SIN flight will be docking at, and it should also show your onward connection flight to BNE and its gate number
- If you should miss the information on your IFE screen, you will surely find the ground staff at the exit of the aerobridge helpful in confirming your SIN-BNE flight's assigned gate and its exact location
- You will NOT need to go to a transfer counter to check in again, because you have been checked through to BNE
- From the above, it is clear you will have all manners of shopping, entertainment and other services - including outdoor gardens themed along the lines of orchid, bamboo, sunflower etc.
- You could also go to many of the big glass windows to photograph airplanes on the ramp
- If you should need to call anyone in Singapore, local calls from the airside of the terminal are complimentary
- You could take a skytrain to Terminal One (airside) and enjoy more of the above (plus the cactus garden or take a dip in a rooftop swimming pool)

You just have to set your watch and ensure you do not miss your connection. Three hours may sound like a long transit, but you will probably have to be dragged kicking to the departure gate. Have a great flight and rest sufficiently onboard 'cos you will need all the energy you can summon during your transit.

That's called security. Some airports do take security very seriously unlike here in the US where they only pretend to take it seriously by harrasing passengers and making the airport experience obnoxiously uncomfortable.

Also thanks to Deaphen, Zvezda and TsenTsan. Deaphen, your kind words are most appreciated however I cannot claim to be Singaporean. I am in fact a proud citizen of the United Kingdom!

I would also like to inform DptMAN that Singapore Airlines has launched Boarding Pass Privileges for passengers in transit which includes discounts for its passengers in certain shops and what I suppose you could call relaxation venues. My personal reccomendation would be the limited edition Singapore Airlines A380 stamps obtainable at Singapore Post where you get a 20% discount.

I like SIN airport, terminal 2 especially, which is where you would be in if you fly SQ. There are help desks throughout the terminal, and they answer all queries with a smile. I have flown SQ economy a few times, and I like it. The leg space is decent ( I am only around 5'4", so make your own guess  Smile ) and food and service on board is very good. There is a food court where you can find lots of different cusines. You can take a shower at the airside transit hotel. There is also a gym and a pool if you want to use them. There is a theatre showing films if you want to watch some, and free wireless internet if you have a laptop. There are also quite a few free internet terminals too.

The IFE on most of the SQ planes is very good, with AVOD. You can watch approximately 50-80 movies, different TV soaps, and also play video games. Overall, a pretty nice experience.

I understand security. I also understand the joke that is TSA. I don't need pointers or a lecture on these points.

I have just never seen security checkpoints at each gate like they have. Given they have flights coming in from all over the world and some places that don't seem too secure it makes sense. It is just different if you have never been there before.

WLG has security at the gates.

SIN is probably the best Transit Airport in the world, and it is not like going through a US hub - Chalk and cheese, with Singapore being a little more pleasant!

The 777 are 3-3-3, so try to get good seats. IFE is best available. Seats on the SV_ 777's have foot rests and an air type raise on the front (don't know how this works, but supplys a little support).

The stops via European airports on the return tend to be quick, and I think they give you an option to step off or stay on board. The 744 on the return is 3-4-3, although at the back it goes down to 2-4-2. The row immediately after the change is the best, just far enough away from the Restrooms, plus you get all the space at the side.

SQ service as an average is very good, CX and SQ are the leaders as they are a consistently high quality.

Check on SQ website for on board service etc, and seating layouts. Another option for seating is seatguru.com.

Enjoy Brissy, need anyone to carry your case?

SIN is a great airport.

I have passed through it a couple of times. Great food outlets. I was returning from a long trip terribly home sick, and I was in tears (of joy) when I saw "IDLY SAMBHAR" sign in one of the food stalls.  Wink It must be "Kaveri" or something.

Don't forget to get that wonderful back massage at T2. There is a massage kiosk and rates are quite reasonable.
