Someone Please Explain This.

Sun May 07, 2006 4:57 pm

I live in Panama City, FL and I have to fly to Nashville, TN on the 24 of this month.

After looking at both NWA and DAL websites (They are the only two airlines that service KPFN) I purchased a ticket through expedia. Now here is where the deal take a really wierd turn.

The fares from NWA (KPFN-KMEM-KBNA) were better than 500 USD. At DAL (KPFN-KATL-KBNA) was 425 USD. Now expedia found me this routing for 320 USD.

KPFN-KATL is ASQ AT7
KATL-KJAX is DAL 763
KJAX-KCLT is USA 319
KCLT-KBNA is USA 734

How the hack is this intenerary cheaper then a more direct one??? That is more fuel more miles and three airlines!!!!! Somthing ain't stirring the kool-aid here...
Flown on:722, 731, 732, 742, 752, 763, DC8, DC9, DC10, A300, A319, A320, A330, PIC on C172, PA28R, D55, A36, DC3

first of all, make sure you DO NOT check a bag in Panama City.

second, for the average traveller, which would you pay more for? A direct route? or would you rather be shipped all over the country? Expedia is locating the cheapest of the cheap fares and shipping you all over the southeast hoping you will make it to your destination. There are a certain number of fares that are available at super discount and expedia has pieced those fares together to get you to Nashville.

I don't think that's the problem UnattendedBag was referring to. The problem is trusting US rampers to get your bag on the right flight! Just thank God the connection isn't in PHL!

Uhh, PFN only has one airliner there at a time. Even if two were there at once, It would be a Delta Connection carrier or Northwest Airlink. I really dont see even the numbnutz around her screwing that up.

Forgot to mention that I will only have a carry-on.

Even though this more flights, less money still make about as much sence as an antenna on an outhouse.

I guess some people will pay more to travel direct, just a thought. Personally I like as many changes as possible. I get to see and / or photograph more aircraft, and meet new people.

BTW an antenna on an outhouse makes some sense, or at least a pile of aviation mags or....a pc with A.Net on it!!!

If you enjoy aviation and are not in a rush take the cheapest flight and enjoy!
Its about the airlines and the planes they fly

To bad FL doesn't fly into BNA. BNA is a expensive market, unless you to happen to live in a WN city.

I checked Expedia.com for one-way flights on May 24 2006.
PNS-BNA $248 OW (Duration: 7hr 54m) Connect in ATL/CLE
TLH-BNA $256 OW (Duration: 6hr 54mn) Connect in CLT/ORD
VPS-BNA $265 OW (Duration: 12hr 22m) Connect in DFW/MCI/ORD
PFN-BNA $325 OW (Duration: 10hr 52mn) Connect in MCO/MCI/CVG

Seems that Expedia does find the cheapest one-way fare but with long trip durations and more then one stop(s).

What I meant was, if you are going to be changing planes 3 times between 3 different carriers, you can count on your checked baggage being lost... I see that you are only taking a carry-on bag.

Make sure each layover is atleast an hour and a half if you can, especially towards the end of your trip in case a leg is delayed.

Ahh, I got ya there.

Im with planeguy on the changes, I got a MiniDV camera and an evil grin....

I would still like to see the business model that explains how this works. I cant be paying for all the fuel that is going to be used to haul my big (300lb) rearend around.

UnattendedBag, again sorry for not getting it! I was doing about 6 things at one time, and didn't have much long term though there!! Thanks for the tip!

That actually happend to me on a trip to HNL in 04. NWA to MEM-LAX, HA to HNL. Bags go missing between MEM and LAX, showed up the next day! It was worse back in 9/01, as on the way there (Pre-11th) DAL lost our bags in DFW. Here is the worst of it. I had an 8 hour delay in DFW and changed to AAL. 8 hours...Didnt get my bags until the last flight AAL in to HNL on the 10th!!

The model here is skewed because we're working with a ticket reseller, Expedia, and not buying direct from an airline.

Expedia buys bunches of seats from the airlines at discounted prices and then resells them to you. So Expedia might be selling this wacky itinerary to you at or near cost, unloading a bunch of segments they have sitting around.

Surely, sometimes similar things happen when buying direct from the carrier.

Indeed they do. I had an itinerary from AUS-MSP on AA through DFW and ORD, which was cheaper than AUS-MSP via either DFW or ORD. Strange.

Look at just about any of their routes to Florida, at least one flight is a 763/764. TPA, MCO, FLL, JAX...

Could that aircraft be making money on that route? Would it not be better to use them for more International or long haul destinations? What is the flight time to JAX? About an hour or so?

ATL-MCO was even flown with a 777, don't know if they still operate that type on the route. Most of the 764s get pulled from domestic service and should be re-located to transatlantic flights, though they might need a cabin refurbishing, so its configured for International flights.

I presume the reason why DL flies lots of widebodies into Florida must have something to do with lots of O&D traffic to Florida. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
