Jet Airways To ZRH, LAX And MUC

Mon May 08, 2006 10:42 pm

Jet Airways is planning to launch a cargo airline within the next two years. It will be headed by a former UPS official. Jet Airways hopes to tap the rising demand for freight transport in the country with the cargo airline. Recently, the company's outgoing COO Peter Luethi had said that the airline last year 67% of its revenues from cargo. The airline also has plans to start a pilot training academy.

Jet Airways also plans to tap the demand for increasing India-bound tourist travel with the launch of new overseas flights to Zurich, Los Angeles and Munich. However, the company may still have a few hurdles to clear, with permission for US flights stuck in the corridors of power. It is also planning direct Amritsar-Birmingham and Amritsar-London flights in 2 months.

The airline is also in talks to tie up with foreign carriers like Air New Zealand and Qantas, said Jet Airways board member Vic Dungca.

Jet it has recorded a 71% rise in its net profit in the last quarter. The profit for the period was Rs 227.12 crore, as against to Rs 133 crore in the corresponding previous quarter. Total income during the quarter rose to Rs 1,969.56 crore from the previous Rs 1,222.61 crore. Jet Airways is planning to raise more resources to finance expansion. It will come out with a $300 follow-on equity issue soon, along with an FCCB issue for $800 million.

For the entire fiscal, Jet Airways posted a 15% increase in its net profit at Rs 452.04 crore compared to Rs 391.99 crore in FY-05, it said. Total income during the reporting fiscal increased to Rs 6,135.47 crore compared to Rs 4,420.17 crore in FY-05. Commenting on the results, Jet Airways' Chairman Naresh Goyal said: "We are pleased to report a strong set of full-year results. We remain the market leader and the most profitable airline in India but we operate in a challenging environment. We are naturally concerned with the high level of input costs, primarily fuel, and we expect that the coming year could remain challenging on this front. Over the coming months, we will be working towards successfully integrating Sahara Airlines' operations into our own, subject to regulatory approvals. This is one of the most exciting opportunities in the history of Jet Airways and we are committed to capturing the full synergies of this acquisition with a sense of urgency."

Jet Airways claimed that as of now, it commands 24% marketshare in the Mumbai-London route.

Jet Airways currently operates a fleet of 43 classic and next generation Boeing 737-400/700/800/900 aircraft, 3 A340-300E aircraft and 8 modern ATR72-500 Turboprop aircraft. With an average age of a little over 5.2 years, the airline has one of the youngest aircraft fleet in the world. Approximately 30,000 passengers travel daily on Jet Airways' 320 flights to 48 destinations in India and beyond, including Colombo in Sri Lanka, Kathmandu in Nepal, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and London Heathrow, UK. Since inception in May 1993 until end-March 2006, Jet Airways has flown approx. 60.7 million passengers.

If I am getting it correctly, they are talking of terminator flights to ZRH and MUC. What sense do they make, unless they are planning to tie up with CrossAir and LH. Both are LH now, and yes 9W has just entered into agreement with LH for FFP. So things seem to be falling in place. scratchchin

But why are thinking about LAX when their US deal is nowhere in site?

Will all of these be with A330s?

BTW, when does 9W is supposed to return those 343's to SAA?

Ahemmm .... Crossair doesn't exist anymore since a few years. I guess, you mean Swiss International, the successor  Wink

As for Jet Airways at ZRH ... I believe it, when I see it. Apparently there are more than one hurdle to overcome. I've been told so at least from a "usually well informed source"  Wink .

A few years back Munich was trying to lure Air India away from Frankfurt. That obviously didn't work out. Zurich is city that Air India flew to for years and dropped in the late 1990s. LA is logical for Jet if they ever work out the problems with the USA.

The initial agreement of the lease was for two years

They already have a tie up FFP wise with QF

Note since the acquisiton with LX ,, LH now has hubs at both MUC and ZRH---FRA will be left out as it is being used as AIs sicssor's hub, and AI will have to be considered as it is an important LH partner whereas 9W is an up and coming LH partner which would be able to exploit both the tourist and bussiness potentials of cities like Zurich and Munich as well as their hub potential with their new partner LH

ZRH on its own cannot hang on...best is to do a DEL-ZRH-GVA-DEL flight with an A 332 three to four times a week max.

I am not sure. At the moment there are two daily ZRH-India flights which are booked out almost all the time: LX ZRH-BOM, A 332; AC ZRH-DEL, B 763.

AC fills up its ZRH-DEL flight from YYZ itself and LX suspended DEL 3 years ago. They only fly to BOM now with the A 332s and that too a majority of their flight is filled with 6th freedom pax generated from USA, YUL, UK and other Western European states.

9W at ZRH is mainly relying on O&D between ZRH and India which isnt a lot. For it to succeed at ZRH, they have to sign a solid interline agreement with LX to send pax onwards to Italy, Spain, Austria, Russia and the Scandinvanian states...same thing has to be done at MUC with LH.

The government of India seems to be firmly behind Jet Airways' plans to launch LAX operations. As far as I know, the last round of India-Hongkong bilateral talks failed in part because the Hongkong government refused to allow fifth freedom rights for Jet to operate HKG-LAX. They were ready to concede such rights to Air India, but not to Jet. Maybe 9W has changed its plans since, but it seems that at some point the airline planned to operate LAX via HKG.

In this case ZRH is somewhat of a scissors hub for flights from Canada to India, with LX & AC coordinating their schedules & flights to provide convenient connections from YUL/YYZ-ZRH-DEL/BOM. I don't know how much of the feed is O&D ZRH-DEL/BOM.

In Belgium there is a big rumour saying that 9W might start a BOM-BRU route but this time not in order to fly on to EWR.

Will we have to wait that 9W receives ists first A332s ??

It would really be great for BRU to get this link.

Not much O&D from India to these places too, is there? Apart from the seasonal tourist traffic

They need some arrangement to connect to transtlantic routes from ZRH.
Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.

To BOM I guess ? That would be great !  dopey  All we need now is a source and an official confirmation if these plans should come to fruition.
Exceptions confirm the rule.

Yes it is. The flights by LX/AC from YUL/YYZ and from BOM/DEL arrive almost at the same time in ZRH. You can change from one to any other. Example from YYZ on AC and change to LX to BOM; or from YUL on LX and change to AC to BOM, and the other way round and also in the other direction.
