One doesn't even have to read the article to know to which hub these flights go Big grin . Surprised to see this addition, but not sure what to make of it, though.

A couple of weeks ago I visited family in Killeen. Definately the nicest small town airport I've been to. When I was boarding my ERJ to take me back to Dallas on my way home, someone in line behind me asked one of the Eagle employees if they'd heard about anyone new coming to the airport. He of course asked specifically about Southwest, but the Eagle guy told him there had been rumors of ASA. Guess he was right!

I knew it all along DL had to start this service that just to much govt money (Ft. Hood) to be giving it away to AA and CO. I can see ever more flts or upgrade a/c in the coming months.  champagne

Isn't this DL's return to ILE? I'm quite sure I flew DFW-ILE on DL many years ago. Of course this time it's from ATL.

Nope! Not that I'm complaining. One more place us Atlantans can fly to nonstop!

Yes. DL flew from DFW to Killeen for many years using the EMB120.

Of course there is. Where there is a strip of pavement longer than 1000', DL will send a plane linking it with ATL.  Smile

Probably not likely yet but I would like to see OCF added. It's most likely the last viable Florida market to serve from ATL for DL...I think that someone will definitely take the chance before too much longer. Metro area over 300K..no air service...but lots of travelers willing to pay a premium to avoid driving to MCO...sounds like OCF-ATL could work to me probably 3X CRJ to start. OCF has already secured funds for a new terminal building and nice runway improvements. Any hints as to what city it actually is?

Very strange announcement indeed. This same topic was discussed here several months ago, and I was of the opinion was that AA and CO pretty much had the market covered, I didn't see DL coming in and being successful.

Certainly some better options for the Killeen/Ft. Hood traveller, but can DL make it last...

Killeen is a great town with a great airport. I am happy that the city officials along with the military decided to move the commercial airline services to Grey Army Airfield. The best big-little terminal out there. I was truely impressed with it.

Couldn't some of the other majors "express" flights take advantage of the military money to be had at GRK? How about a carrier from the west. Perhaps US/HP Express from PHX or UA Express from DEN? NW Airlink from MEM?

When did this occur? Moving from ILE to GRK? Anyone have info on that? According to AirNav GRK is not open to civilian commercial traffic, and in fact a PPR is required for every aircraft that is not OD Green . . .

No it isn't. It was a craphole in 1977-78 when I was stationed there, and it was a craphole in 1999 when I was back for a short visit. It'll never be anything but a military moocher - and if the US Army wasn't there, Killeen wouldn't be either. (Nor would Harker Heights or Copperas Cove for that matter).

Whoaaaa Ancflyer, you might want to chill on the generalizations. The Central Texas area has changed much in the last 10 years (including Copperas Cove and Harker Heights). Truth is this one of the fasted growing areas in Texas. Not only the largest military base in the free world but also the largest Hospital in Texas just minutes down the road in Temple. And Sun City retirement community (think 55 and older and RICH) just 25 minutes south of GRK.

The increase interest from airlines is from of course a new customer base to tap into. Fact,75% of the area traffic travel to AUS to fly,and 25% from GRK. Getting to AUS from the north is a PAIN,and many who live in Round Rock and Georgetown on the north side of Austin are finding it easier to drive north 30-40 minutes to GRK. Heck,if you do not check luggage, you can go from the gate to your car in 6 minutes...........So just getting some of that 75% to fly local is nice increase.

The aviation officials are also grounded in reality. They know the most they can expect now are regional airlines. But as traffic grows they know inquiries from airlines will grow.

As regards service from SWA,not likely, but as an airport official once stated they know GRK is there.

Just callin' it like I saw it . . . in 1999 and in the late 1970s.

That's neither here nor there really, since the possibility of me returning to that area is about as good as me being elected Pope tomorrow . . .

Anyway - GRK vice ILE?

I think there are two choices for this one?

a - What the hell another gap in our "fly everywhere within 9000 miles from Atlanta" campaign?

or

b - What the hell we have to fly there from Atlanta if anyone else flies there from anywhere.

I can't give you an exact date, but I can tell you it has been since I got here to the sand box in April 04, because one of my co-workers was pitching a fit when our travel office booked him to GRK instead of ILE, until it was explained to him about the airport change. I believe it was sometime during that summer of '04.

Maybe one of the locals can pipe in here...

Dang man! Take a chill pill. A lot has changed since 1999 my friend. The whole area has doubled or perhaps tripled in size since then. Many, many new businesses have moved in. I was surprised myself at all the developement that has taken place when I went back about a month and a half ago.

Yeah, it's probably been a lil over a year or two that the move occured. Killeen built a fresh new terminal and road infrastructure leading to it. The terminal is located near the south end of the runway, while the military still occupies the other side. Air traffic has steadily grown over the years and the Saabs and ATR's of Eage and Continental Express respectively were not cutting it anymore. Both airlines are bringing in the RJ's now that they have use of the longer runway at Grey. Granted both airlines are using a mix of RJs and propliners. Google the new airport and you will see pics of the new terminal.

Very good for Killeen . . . AirNav doesn't have the updated info at all . . .

I don't have fond memories of the Rio Scareways DHC-6s from ILE-DFW back in the day.

Nice looking new terminal . . . .

Hey Ancflyer, the next time you happen to fly through GRK,you will notice a little museum (no lie) dedicated Rio Airways (Ok,it was Scareways when they had the Twin Otters).

Back to the subject at hand, nice to have DL back, and expect RJ service from either UA or US to points west per rumors. There is alot of traffic that AUS siphons from here, and its about to change.

GRK is an interesting joint-use airport. It's one of the several in Texas that I know of where the available runway length has nearly been cut in half due to their reluctance to retract the aircraft arresting wires.

And add Cedar Rapids, IA (CID) & Erie, PA (ERI) - service not started yet, I don't think. Or maybe it's seasonal or something.

Cedar Rapids-Atlanta service will start June 9th. This will be our first link to the ATL hub and I hope to fly it soon!  Smile

Looks like ERI also gets their non stop AL service as well on the same date.
