Malev's Black Noses

Tue May 09, 2006 7:47 am

Just curious, are Malev's black noses just a unique part of their paint scheme, or does it serve some sort of purpose?

Always found it to be ... an eyesore. But then again, visualized the same aircraft without the big nose and found that it would look too plain, as in Euro-white plain. Think of it of a nice huge mole, a beauty mark in certain parts of the world...

Is this a new livery? Their old one had blue (I think) noses...

It's because brown noses wouldn't get any respect. Big grin

On a serious note, I think I read something about how darker colors are used to mitigate radio wave interference on the equipment in the radome, depending on what is installed--but I could be wrong.

This reminds me -- is this why a lot of liveries used to have black "spots" on the radome?

I've also heard it reduces glare into the cockpit...and as far as I know, MALEV does have dark blue noses, based on my many past adventures to Hungary

Hmm... the glare thing I'm aware of as it's been used for years around the cockpit windows, as can been seen on Westjet 737s easily. I wondered about the black noses on Alitalia as well and wondered if it's just a cosmetic thing.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the technology or radio waves... but I know those blue noses are there because when they decided to redesign the livery (in 1988) they wanted to pick some main "pieces" from the old design. I think MA has an elegant livery, even if it's nearly 20 years old...

White nose shows marks more easily.
A dark nose tends to cover them up.
If you see a white mark on a dark nose.. you know it needs inspecting closer...

In Germany if you see a football nose you can give the plane a good kick'in towards the airport fence.. and if you go through it.. you score a goal.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

This can also be seen on LOT aircraft.

Just thought I'd contribute a bit, the DL Widget scheme had black noses throughout their fleet.

So did TW, a glare sheet anyway, on some of their 747s

And AA, on their MD-80s (although if I'm not mistaken, this is being phased out)

After all this, my guess is that Malev's (I stand corrected) BLUE noses are just a unique part of their paint scheme. If it was a glare shield, it would be close to the cockpit windows, but since it isn't, and it's rather large, it must just be cosmetic.

Another thought... could there be a ulterior motive involved by Malev? From head on, someone could easily recognize the large blue spot and think "Malev". I'm reminded of how the US Navy and Grummann painted a radiation symbol on the noses of the EA-6B Prowlers so that the LSOs on carriers could tell them apart on landing from the A-6 Intruders. Perhaps there's some similarity here?

(yeah yeah, I know Malev isn't landing their aircraft on many carriers these days...)

Several previous posts in the archived section on "black noses". Served a specific purpose originally, but now seems to not be as important. Assume those that still use it is just the fact they haven't changed their livery.
