AC 763 YUL->LHR...

Thu May 11, 2006 8:04 am

I do the YUL->LHR treck 4 or 5 times a year. I am fortunate enough to fly Executive First.

I am booked to go at the end of June and noticed that AC runs 2 flights per day on this route BUT they seem to be flying 767-300s - I am usually fortunate enough to fly a 330-300 which is a pretty nice ride (but no beds).

The last time I rode the 763 on this route - 2 years ago almost- it was an old Canadian Ailnes plane - green interior, old seats 2-2-1 setup. I must say that being in the single seat was nice but apparently there are 2 different-mirror image- layouts and these is no way to know if row A or row K is the single row until the plane arrives at the gate.

Does anyone know if these interiors have been upgraded yet - the though of spending 7 hours on a plane with no PTV (I don't sleep well on the plane) and a notebook computer with max 2 hours of "viewing" time is tough to imagine!!

Thanks

(first post - long time lurker Great Site!!)

Hi,

First welcome to a.net!

AC's B767 have very patchy interiors. There's the CP-style seats (in a 1-2-2 config):

then, there are the AC-style seats (in a 2-2-1 config):

Notice that, the latter do have PTVs (on at least some planes). The interiors are a bit old, however I find the seats quite comfortable (I've slept quite well on both seat styles).

Regarding, whether the single seat is A or K, by all means call AC a few days before the flight and ask for the single seat; it worked every time for me (but there's always the risk of a last-minute equipment sub I suppose...). Another hint: the A seats in the CP config have a lot of extra storage space next to the right armrest. I love that feature!

In terms of upgrading the interiors, the B767s are supposed to be the first planes to get the new flat beds. However, I have been perplexed by this picture:

It's clearly the CP-style seats, but with the new-style seats covers (and they look pretty awful in that color!). Is this just a stop-gap until the flat beds are installed?

Anyway, hope this helps a bit. Of course, I'm worried that I opened more questions than I gave you answers...

Safe flying,  wave

Tony;
Thanks for you reply - the only version I have been on (twice I think) is the old CP with the green seats - while they are comfortable and the seat storage next to the single is nice...they are old and worn out. I was also perplexed by that picture of what seemt to be new covers on the old seats - seems very strange!

I guess I am bugged by the fact that I (or my company) is paying more than $4k for a flight and there is no real in flight entertainment...it really helps pass the time.

Have you even flown BA from YUL to LHR someone told me they are flying a 777 on that route but I think it is actually a 763. (plus I would miss out on my AC points if Iflew BA)...

The first 763 goes won't be released until the end of June and is planned to operated on AC878/9 YYZ-ZRH-DEL & return. Unless there's a change of routing, there's a 99% chance you won't see it on your flight, regrettably.

A few planes had the new fabric installed for type-trial/wear testing purposes.

If you're looking for the single seat, it's the "K" seat on the original AC aircraft, and the "A" seat on the original CP aircraft.

Best way to get a single seat is to ask when checking in. While there may be last-minute aircraft changes, they'll definitely know what aircraft is operating the flight and the seat map in the check-in system will be updated to reflect this. So, best bet to get a single seat is to get to the airport early (you're in business class so you can pass the time in the lounge) and hope that one is still available.

You will probably notice when using advanced seat selection on an Air Canada B767-300, you will usually be assigned a seat in the centre pair of seats. This would make sense as they do not change with aircraft configuration.

If you prefer a single seat, it is best to ask when checking in, or even better .... approximately 24 hours in advance, when the aircraft configuration is likely finalised, call reservations and change your seat selection.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

I haven't flown BA longhaul since 1997 I believe...

Aha. This explains it. Thanks!

Actually, when I got upgrades confirmed 4 days before the flight they seemed to know which plane it would be as I always asked for the single seat and they also gave it to me.

How about a connection via Toronto? AC has about 5-6 flights from YYZ-LHR-YYZ with B763/A330/A340.

Yes- I had considered that - partly because I have never flow a 340 - however it's more expensive (company policy dictates I take the cheapest flight) and it take about 2.5 hours longer (back-tracking to toronto) - I had thought about taking the daytime flight from TO for a change but decided against that.

Hello

If you took 30 seconds to view the service listing on aircanada.com, you would find out that you will get an individual DVD player for your use.
next up: YYC, SFO, SYD, AKL, WLG, CMB, BKK, SIN, FRA, VCE, JFK

BriBoy:

I'll look around for 30 spare seconds!!!

FYI: The personal DVD players are portable versions - the type that come from WalMart or Canadian tire - they do not offer them on the night flight because it causes too much cmootion handing them out. They walk around with a binder of movies - if you are lucky to be sitting near where they start handing them out(on the home bound journey only) you might get a player that works and a movie you want to see. This is nothing like the excellent PTV system they have on the 330s - DM

They are actually hi-end Panasonic DVD players--haven't seen them at either WalMart of CanTire. I have faithfully offered them on every single flight, day or night as the customer has paid for upgraded entertainment. There are 120 DVD's per flight--so split amongst 25 customers where only 50% will take a DVD, it's rare that one doesn't get the movie of their choice. If you've been "short changed" you need to speak to the Service Director, or bring it to the attention of Customer Relations. Having said that, I'll be happy to see them go in favour of newer technology.

FlyACYYZ;

Obviously, you have never worked one of the flights I was on - I was told specifically by a F/A, when I could not sleep, that they do have some in cabin entertainment systems but they do not give them out on night flights as most passengers prefer to sleep.

On the way back (same trip) they did give them out but many were non-fuctional and the passengers who requested them were simply frustrated. Maybe they have upgraded the units since then.

Generally speaking, I must say that I find the service on A/C to be exceptional - in fact sometimes I find there is almost too much food (the afternoon flight back from LHR to YUL is non-stop eating) and the food is pretty good (love those freh backed cookies).

The 763's are great. Personally, I feel they are by far the best product that AC offers.

I am curious as to why you feel that way? What do you like about the 763s over the 330 or 340?

I better watch my words as I just came out of a suspension for bashing Airbus. My answer would likely place me in another suspension!

But, slightly straying away from the topic at hand, Im not sure whether or not you know that AC's airbus crafts and likely the 763's will be getting the boot, so to speak, to make way for the 777's and 787's due in a few years. However, while many people do favor the 330's and 340's for long-haul, folks must consider that the 763's will be getting a huge makeover including PTV's and new seats, supposedly extending to a flat position. The Airbus members of the fleet have been simply ignored and will not be redone and will likely exit the fleet well before the 763's do.

So, in conclusion, the 763's have a bigger potential than the 330/340's and will likely be favored by many loyal AC customers in the coming years after their rapidly-approached makeover date.

Just my $0.02 (CDN)

Cheers,

My friend, the next time that happens you need to tag the flight number and date, and submit a report to Customer Solutions. You have paid big $$$ for that service or earned the right to make use of all amenities if you've redeemed Aeroplan mileage. I have to have faith that most of us provide a consistent service, and if you received less, for that you have my apologies. My only recommendation is that the customer accept one after the meal service for two reasons: In order that they don't miss the news broadcast, and secondly, it gets rather crowded with the meal and table setting. If the particular aircraft has the DVD entertainment, I make a point of advising them along with my personal introduction, and menu presentation, the type of video that is offered on that flight.
