Oban Airport - Question?

Sat May 13, 2006 5:39 am

It has been reported recently that Oban Airport (North Connel) is pencilled in for some development and upgrading.
Years ago Loganair used it on as a stop from Glasgow to the Hebridean Islands.
I am surprised that it has not been developed again more recently. A good basic route network would boost the tourism and business for the region.

Anyone know the latest on its development?

If it was up and running today. I am sure it could be viable. A 50 seat - Dash 8 type aircraft doing the OBN-LCY-OBN (or another London airport) a couple of times a day. Maybe stop off a Carlisle each way?

Any comments?

An Oban-Carlisle-London flight could do well actually

For the first 11 years of my life we spent our summer holidays on the caravan site just north of the runway. It was not well used in those days, perhaps a couple of planes a week, and we used to go for walks around the runway. The only regular use it got was from the seabirds who dropped shellfish onto the runway to break the shells open, the runway was covered it bits of shell.
I don't suppose you can walk on the runway these days !

It would be great to see some sort of service there, perhaps a summer service for the tourist traffic would be viable?

Don't try to keep up with the Joneses - bring them down to your level !
