I can't see JetBlue in GYY anytime soon. Have fun convincing the JFK/BOS/IAD business crowd that they should fly into Indiana (Gary, no less) to get to Chicago. The yields will be terrible. JetBlue is waiting for ORD, but I wouldn't be shocked to seem them in MDW either.

Interesting note about Gary, When Boeing moved the corporate offices to Chicago....they based the 2 BBJs at Gary...over MDW and ORD.

I'd love to see JetBlue in Gary....

I think that they could really draw business with flights to BOS/JFK/IAD/FLL/MCO....

It would be a great thing!

IIRC, Boeing first based its biz jets at MDW, then moved them to GYY due to the delays at MDW.

Also, Chicago and Gary signed an interstate compact, so that some ticket taxes collected on ORD and MDW passengers are used for capital improvement projects at GYY.

As for B6, I've read several times that it wants into ORD, because it feels that ORD needs an LCC, particularly on routes to New York and the L.A. area. MDW already has enough LCC serivce to cities that B6 flies.

JetBlue: Can't see that happening. B6 wants ORD, not MDW and definitely not GYY.
Delta: Could happen, but probably just 2-3x daily CRJ service to ATL (where else?).

Who do you think will do the ramp and the ticket counters? Do you think that it would be cheaper for Comair or ASA to do it? Or will Delta have there own people do it?
And will it be CRJ's or MD-80's???

In all honesty, I cannot see JetBlue entering GYY anytime soon, if ever. They have expressed a major interest in ORD, and they have said that they would prefer to not fly out of MDW. I think Delta may get this one, but I wouldn't be surprised if you see B6 in ORD and refuse the offer at GYY.

I think DL has more chance of serving GYY than B6. Besides, if B6 moved in, I'm sure they'd call it Chicago service, but that sounds an awful lot like FR...

Interesting. Right now, that's gotta be great for GYY. The question now is, if GYY has regular commercial ops, will it be obligated to return the favor?  scratchchin

I honestly think that GYY service would be a good start for JetBlue.

They could call the city - GARY/CHICAGO (which technically is the airport name).

I think that this airport would be a good way to get the foot in the door to Chicago. Look how Southwest really improved and brought traffic to PVD, MHT, etc....

JetBlue could do the same with GYY... With 3 jetways, they could have quite a bit of service...

I think that this could possibly be one of the smartest moves JetBlue could make!

There is a big difference: GYY is closer to the Loop than ORD (Chicago's undisputed primary airport) is.

I don't think they want to go into GYY yet. They probably should just work at getting into ORD and than maybe later on they can expand from GYY to places that they can't from ORD due to not enough space or bad times. Or maybe they could kind of just have GYY to compliment ORD service but I think ORD should come first and then maybe GYY later on.

Thanks for the clarification. I did not realize that, so I guess strike my FR reference from the record, lol.

Quoting JetBlueAtJFK (Reply 14):

But does that really make sense? What I mean is, if they get into ORD but quickly run out of room to grow (which seems inevitable) and have to move to GYY anyway, wouldn't it just make sense to start from GYY so there are no expansion hiccups along the way or duplication of resources? I know that they've always said they wanted ORD, but I would hope smart decision making from a financial and logistics standpoint would quickly rule this seemingly wasteful duality out.

Just a couple of days ago, I was driving along Irving Park Road and York Road (which both neighbor ORD) and there were lots of shuttered homes/businesses at the SW corner. Lots of heavy equipment on the east side/NE corner. I don't know if the expansion is in full swing, but it looks like it.

Why would DL fly into Gary? they have flights into O'Hare, Midway, and South Bend as it is today. What does adding a couple of RJ flights to the wasteland of Gary do for them? If they did do it I'd expect them to be gone within a few months.

Well DeltaGator, I was wondering when someone would start slinging mud. Congratulations on trying to turn a thoughtful thread into a mud fest. There is another thread about an article about GYY in Airport Business Online. The article explains things like GYY being closer to the Loop than ORD and other little facts you are unaware of. Some of the posters in this thread know what is happening in the Chicago area. You Sir, do not.

Ok, wasteland was a bad term. I was just posing the question of why Gary given the 3 airports in the nearby area that DL alreay flies into.

I've been to Chicago many times. If Gary is so wonderful and provides easy access to the Loop then great. Perhaps I'll consider it. Until someone steps up to the plate and keeps air service there my business will just keep me flying in and out of O'Hare.

Apology accepted. SBN is not nearby. It is 66.63 miles and 1 hr 13 min from GYY to SBN per Mapquest. The GYY catchment area (30 min drive time) is 2.5 million!
The city limits of the City of Chicago are actually less than 5 miles from the western boundary of GYY.

No problem. I thought South Bend was closer. I stand corrected.

But with all of the work they are doing on the expressway(I94) and the work on the skyway it would be easyer to fly into ORD for the next 2-3 years...

Yes I think it does, it is my opiion. They have cities like Oaklnad and San Jose where they are in the same region and they aren't full at one or the other, or even JFK and LGA, very close, they have JFK as base and LGA as a compliment to Florida.
And yes they want like 4 Gates or so but still I am not talking really short term. I am talking like 10 yeard. 35 flights in 10 years there and no more would be odd. What I am basically saying don't go into GYY to start off as Chicago, because people from NY that don't know chicago in and out will see Gary Indiana and might jsut say oh well you can get AA for $30 or so more and actually land in Illinois. A lot of people don't know that Gary happens to be near CHicago even though it is in Indiana. I say get into ORD, establish your selves and one it groes around, compliment it with GYY to show your seriod about the market. Now I feel within the next 3 years or so B6 could get into ORD and then so on....

I don't think it will happen. I hate to say it but i think Gary has too bad a "rap" when it comes to the city. Whenever someone mentions "Gary" most people i have spoken to think of a poor city with a high crime rate. I have never been to GYY but have driven thru the area on I-80. It smells bad, and does not look attractive. If i was to use that airport, i would want to use it during the day and not leave my car. I think they would have to do something to clean the entire area up before i would see a major airline serve the airport. I wonder how the ATA connection GYY-IND service would have done....

cheers.
