Great British Airways Ad

Sat May 13, 2006 9:50 pm

I've seen posts about MA/SN adverts, so I thought I would post these brilliant BA adverts!
What do you make of them?

This one is quite funny - it's BA taking punch at LCCs!

The second one I've seen a few times before. But the first I've never seen and I must say, I love it!
There are other ways and there's British Airways

I know that the second one with the face is BA's most popular ad ever (statistics), but I for once prefer the "Jolly Foreigners" one. I think it's BA's best commercial with wit and humour.

With an airline like BA, they should definately have ads along those lines!

Great job BA!

In the 1st and 3rd commercial, P.J. O'Rourke appears. He is an American, and is a well known humorous social and political commentator in newspapers, magazines and on cable TV news programs.
I like the good-natured tweaking of the UK in the 1st and the more direct hit on the LCC's in the third. Mmmm, I think they were making a big point as to Ryanair...especially with that one scene where the sign for the city centere (Center) was 60 kms away!

That is a very famous commercial for BA. It was all over television in Australia in the late 1980s. There's another really famous BA one as well, but I can't remember it.

The first one you linked is hilarious!!  Smile
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Unfortunately these are all quite a few years old now - there hasn't been anything similar to these recently...

The 1st was definitely the best. I saw the third one aired a few times here in the UK. I do prefer it when BA use subtle humour rather than cheesy imagery and lines in their ads. Doesn't make you cringe!!

I know this has been asked before but I can't find the answer in the archives, but what song do they use in their ads? I'm speaking specifically of the ones that air in the US during Wimbledon. I think their commercials are among the best around.

Quoting Blink182 (Reply 11):
but what song do they use in their ads?

Here is the information. Source: Howards Blake's Website

British Airways Theme Tune (Lakme) op.333 (March 1984)
Music for a TV advertising film, the launch of the famous duet from Lakme
Commissioned by: Saatchi and Saatchi
Instrumentation: 2 sopranos and orch.
[Key to Abbreviations]
First Performance: Recorded CTS March 31 1984, Elaine Barry and Judith Pearce (sopranos) and orchestra conducted by Howard Blake

Notes
The director Tony Scott had been introduced to this duet for two sopranos by Howard, who then recorded it with his own orchestra for Tony's feature film 'The Hunger' in 1982. The song comes from the opera 'Lakme' by Leo Delibes (1883) and is called 'Viens Mallika'.

Two years later Tony asked Howard if the track could be adapted for a TV commercial for British Airways (titled 'Wider Seats'). He used the same sopranos and orchestra but adapted it to fit the famous shot of a 747's shadow climbing the Empire State Building. Innumerable re-arrangements followed over a period of more than 20 years.

Have to say don't you just love those old SAATCHI commercials. These have to go down as some of the most powerful branded commercials ever produced. They are fantastic. Have to admit that the latest ones 2006 are not market leaders but time will tell!!!??? Lead on BA!!

I think that the Flower Duet was one of Lord King's favourite peices of music which is one of the reasons it was chosen.

The second commercial is very similar to Australia's Carlton Draught beer add. I do not know which was released first, but i do know that they are both great.!

Many thanks to all three of you. Good memories! For a short - too short - but decent excerpt from the Flower Duet from Lacme go to http://www.aaca.co.za/music/mind_body/power_down_9.htm
and scroll down to click number 11.
Every time I hear it it reminds me of sitting in a BA cabin as it was played over the intercom while the remaining passengers boarded.

The current BA (UK) Dolphins in the Clouds TV Ad was subject of a post a couple of weeks back. It was called 'New UK BA Tv Ad.' and Reply 2 included a direct link to a download of the ad. that plays on Real Player. (Sorry I have not discovered how to link to a previous thread!)
