SJC Baggage Claim

Mon May 15, 2006 1:20 am

It seems that every time I fly from SJC, on the return flight, it takes an enormous amount of time to reclaim baggage. Living in the south bay, we like to use SJC rather than SFO because it is closer, but it seems like the time you save driving to SFO is just spent waiting around the luggage carousel. Has anyone had experiences like that? Does anyone know why this happens?

I think most people at SJC just carry their baggage on board. Do you fly WN? WN never seems to pay attention to which carousel the baggage should go on --- so make sure you check all the carousels. The old terminal "C" is usually pretty fast except sometimes they just dump it through a door and it does not get to carousel..., I think SJC is about average --- certainly no worse than SFO, but in terminal "A" the baggage somehow needs to get across the street. Why don't you just see how big a suitcase you can carry on like everybody else at SJC? It bothered me in the past (people bringing large suitcases on board), but I figure if you can't fight'em, join em.

while I agree its a bit on the "slow" end, it never has been so slow that it would make such a large of a difference....I've even seen my luggage show up right at the time I got downstairs.... spin

We flew SEA-SJC on AS last month, our bags had been going round and round for a while when we got there. Even our over-sized was sittin there.

The bus system to the rental cars is a joke however

Trust me..baggages take a long time to arrive at SFO too. I can usually eat a meal in a restaurant airside before I collect my luggage, and sometimes it still does not arrive by the time I get there.

Today, for example, baggages for AA 179 (JFK-SFO) took an hour (from arrival at gate) to reach the baggage claims.

Can you please be more specific? Maybe specify which terminal, or airline?? These are rather important factors...

Correct. WN and AA bag belts are located at the same place on the ramp and the bags of both airlines follow pretty much the same looooooooooong path to get to baggage claim. The bags have quite a lengthy journey once they are dropped off by the ramp agent. They have to travel under the street to get there. Over-sized items are quite the pain in the ass as the agent must walk them underground to either a staircase or elevator up to baggage claim.

WN has only two carousels at SJC and they sit right next to each other. And when a ramp agent offloads the bags, he/she types in the flight number to be displayed to the passengers.

baggage claim at terminal C isnt that bad until the evening rush occurs. i use to work for delta and there are only 3 carousels so when the bank of flights come into terminal C theres usually a back up.
