This Really Bugs Me; "Passengers Who Stand Before The Plane Stops

Mon May 15, 2006 9:56 pm

I don't know if this has been discussed before, and im not sure if there is much to discuss but, it really, really bugs me... at the end of a flight, why the heck do people rush out of their seats as soon as they feel the aircraft come to a stop, may that be to give way, a taxiway hold short instruction or even at the gate itself but never, never respect the seatbelt sign. It seems to be a competition to see who stands up first, and then wait, standing, staked like sardines, for a good number of minutes.... hell, sometimes docking procedures call for a tug tow to the jet bridge with engines off!! Still, up goes the masses.... and even a PA, may that be by the cabin crew or by the captain himself, seems to have jack of an effect! Once they are up, they don't come down!

It seems to me that common sense says that when you are in an element you know jack about (most passengers on a commercial flight) you should have the decency, common sense and shear respect to comply with the professionals who make it happen!

As I said, this is no more than my opinion but felt like sharing...

All the best, (except to the sardines amongst you  Smile )

Howard500, I share your opinion on this one. I understand that after a long haul flight everyone is just gagging to get off the plane, but...you can't do that until the gate is docked and the door is open...I always remain seated until people are actually moving toward the door, the impatience of some passengers astounds me, despite the fact they might have just flown halfway around the world in the space of a few hours, everyone's still in a hurry.
If I have a window seat sometimes I'll wait till everyone else has left the plane until I get up, after all everyone else will just be waiting for their bags, might aswell relax and take your time.
I actually have a similar frustration with people who, when catching a train will crowd the platform before it's stopped...baffles me. Again, can't do anything until the doors are open.
Ok, rant over  Smile

If i was the captain of the flight i would demand everyone to sit down in there seats otherwise we dont move then if they are late for connections its the ignorant bastards fault. I hate getting ambushed with people leaning over and shoving your arm when your sitting in your seat.
The fact is, is that the general public are ignorant to death and dont realise its a health and safety risk to stand up, would they stand up in a car? No so why in a plane?

Interesting topic, considering I just got off a flight yesterday!

One woman in the aisle seat across from me, actually stood up while we were holding to cross 9L in PHL, just to get her cell phone out of her bag.

I never get out of my seat until the aircraft is at the gate, but I do rush to get off the plane, because I just want to get where I am going, even though I have to wait for my luggage.

I think that pretty much puts the finger on the spot. It doesn't even have to be a long flight to be uncomfortable if you're sitting in Economy.

Quoting Dean (Reply 1):
but...you can't do that until the gate is docked and the door is open...

True, but let say you're sitting in Economy in an A. 320. You've got six seats abreast but only two windows. So of the six passengers in a row, only two can clearly see that the aircraft has in fact not yet reached the parking position.

Quoting Howard500 (Thread starter):
but never, never respect the seatbelt sign.

Actually, that's one of the things that really bug me, while we're at it. If it's so important to follow the instructions given by the 'non-smoking' and 'fasten seatbelt' sign, then why aren't they more visible?? It's not like you automatically look up when you hear the ringing sound when they are switched on and off (which incidentally sounds very much like the intercom to my untutored ear).

Let me clarify, I have no problem with people rushing to stand up AFTER the seat belt signs go off, in my opinion its pointless, but hey, whatever makes you happy. Personally I stay in my seat and chill, until the line starts moving. What im saying is that, until the sign is OFF, even if it is just for common sense, stay in your seat! Again, how many times have we seen people standing up when the aircraft is miles from the apron or the gate, hell thats just dangerous!

Quoting Knightsofmalta (Reply 6):

buddy, thats precisely the point, watch the sign!

They are there, right over your head plus the PA announcement reminding you. Any more obvious and people would say it would be exaggerated!  Smile

That is my point precisely. Yes, they are there, right above your head in front of your face. Nonetheless, as you yourself remarked, to the point of provoking you to start this thread, people don't give a rat's arse about the luminous signs in front of them and disregard them instead. This leads me to believe that a) the sign is in serious need of relocation/redesign if airlines want passengers to take them seriously or b) the sign is in fact not as important as one might like to think, at least that is the conclusion I think most passengers come to.

In all the hundreds of flights I've been on I've never seen this happen! The only example that came close was when I was on a school exchange trip to Berlin and on departure for the return leg some of the guys in the group stood up just as we started takeoff roll - angry F/As I can assure you!

Just as a little post-script to what the thread starter has said.

Folks who switch their mobile phone on as soon as the aircraft parks, or even before. "BEEP BEEP" all around the aircraft, all those undeliverable messages while the phone was off and voice-mails that need very urgent attention.

Relax, wait for five minutes and then do what you need to do in relative privacy instead of inflicting everyone else with your infernal gibbering!

Guilty...sort of. I don't fire up my cell phone to retrieve any messages. I do so so that I can alert the person who is there to pick me up that I've landed (safely) and I can give them an idea when to expect me at the curb.

Well..in US airlines, you are allowed to use mobile phones once the aircraft has landed. I guess US airlines were pressured by people to use phones as early as possible

I don't like it when I'm on the aisle and a (stranger) seat-mate stands on my toes with his butt in my face for five minutes. I can't believe that people can be that rude!

One time, shortly after stopping at the gate and 80% of the pax had already jumped to their feet, most of them stumbled and a few bags were dropped on assorted heads. Turned out we had (somehow) missed the jetway and the rampers had to hook up the tug and push the plane back a couple of feet! It was a "solid connect."

On a related note.....

How about those freakin' MO-RONS that stand in front of the entrance to airport trains, only to rush them when the door opens which keeps everyone from getting off? Even when they are at the final train stop idiots try to rush on so noone can get off in a timely manner. Better yet, why doesn't everyone just walk in the airport....unfortunately, in these days of airport breakfast, lunch, fastfood dinners, and moving sidewalks most people need the excercise.

It always winds me up that when you are waiting to board, even before the aircraft starts boarding a huge crowd congregates to be the first on the plane. Even when they're calling by rows everyone else gets up and waits by the desk!

You're going to be stuck on that aircraft for hours - why would anyone want to spend a minute longer on there than they have to?

Those same people wanting to be the first on there are always the ones queuing to be first off it at the other end - not so much fun after several hours is it?

I've been on several DL flights where people started getting up ... and the pilot stopped the plane, announcing it wasn't going to move until he heard every seatbelt click ...

People sat back down real fast ...

It happens all the time... but you have also consider the fact that the pax have been sitting for awhile slurpin' back coffee/tea/soft drinks.. and I don't know about you people, but when the plane lands there's an instant need to take a leak!

As well, the best airline seats become very uncomfortable after an hour or two and it's definitely nice to stretch out...

And considering how much I fly and how often I see this behaviour, I guarantee that some of you engage in this behaviour too... at most, there is maybe 10-20% of the pax remaining in their seats... statistically speaking, some of you do it too!

I agree it's pretty dumb overall.. but it'll never end. Get used to it.

Well, for those who are visually impaired, there's also usually an announcement given right after the aircraft turns off the runway "ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated with your seatbelts securely fastened until the aircraft has come to a complete stop at the gate and the captain has turned off the seatbelt sign". So it's not like those particular customers don't know what's going on - they choose not to pay attention to both audio and visual cues. So if they get up while the plane is moving and something (heaven forbid) were to strike the aircraft, they can be seriously injured; there's a reason that the FAA comes up with these rules, and I can guarantee that it's not just to annoy a passenger.  wink

As a flight attendant, I do not allow anyone in my cabin to be out of their seat after landing until that seatbelt sign comes off. I don't care if I know we've come to our complete stop at the gate. If that sign is on, I have no problem getting on that PA and embarassing people by singling them out and sitting them down. Many times I have had aircraft that have stopped too short and needed to be towed several more feet to reach a jetway. And thats not possible with 70 people trying to get into an aisle and get their bags down.

People don't understand how easily they can be injured on an aircraft. It doesn't have to crash for you to get hurt. Turbulence is always a danger. On the ground, their are all kinds of things the aircraft could run into or that could run into the aircraft.

A lady once asked me if their had been a problem with my airline before, because the other flight attendant and I were strict about the seatbelt sign being on while in the air. We followed our airline's procedure - made the announcement when the sign was illuminated, performed a compliance check, and repeated the announcement as people got out of their seat while the sign was still on. I politely informed her that no their had not been a problem with our airline, and we would like to keep it that way.

No one is suing me or my airline because they got hurt in my cabin while out of their seat when that sign is on. I make sure to cover every base. They are well aware they are at their own risk being out of their seat!

Let's face it, there are a number of reasons for pax to rush to stand before they should, jepordizing their own and many other's safety. I travel on a bus every day, and it isn't uncommon for me to get up before the stop in NYC to get up to exit more quickly.
Many times, they are just anxious people and just want to move on quickly as just their nature. Then you do have the people with tight connections to other flights or to someone meeting them perhaps made tighter due to delays. If traveling internationally, you want to beat as many people on your flight and the perhaps many others (like at LHR) to get a better place on line at immigration and customs. Then you have the ones with the full bladder who had way too much in beverages and are in urgent need to pee. Then there are those who need to get to information or cell phones in their carry on.
There are many reasons - none of the really worth the risk of injury by jumping up too soon before final docking of the a/c.

When I flew emirates, jnb - dxb , 18 months ago an annoying space invader sitting next to me jumped up as soon as the plane hit the runway and ran 2 the door 2 catch his connection 2 karachi. needless to say he had some very pissed off F/As on his tail yet he refused 2 budge from the door. This same man kept on telling me the plane was gonna crash as we were in a holding stack above dubai.the most annoying seat mate ever. If he was arrested i would have been the first 2 testify against him.

I flew on Air France LAX to CDG in 2001. The plane just landed and was rolling out on the runway. A whole section of economy class stood up en mass, opened the overhead bins, removed their carry-ons, put on their jackets etc. The flight attendants turned to see what was going on, initially intended to do something about it but then just ignored it and laughed about it. They were tired themselves. If this had been Lufthansa … go figure !

i have to agree it is really irritating when people get up before the plane reaches the stand. recently i flew LCA-DUB with eurocypria and upon arrival in DUB we had to wait on a taxiway for 20mins for a stand, as soon as the plane stopped on the taxiway people got up a began taking down bags the crew had to tell passengers 3 times to return to there seats, idiots!!
