Frontier's New Web Site

Tue May 16, 2006 7:46 am

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drm.../0,2777,DRMN_23910_4698789,00.html

Frontier is finally revamping its web site. It is scheduled to be launched at 2359 tonight (May 15).

Some of the highlights include -

-Improved navigation, look and feel
-Online merchandise store (F9 logo gear, stuffed animals, etc.)
-Online interactive games
-Universal search
-Nearly 200 new pages of information
-A downloadable program similar to WN's "Ding" product

I was surprised that only 35% of F9's ticket sales are made through its web site. It says they want to increase that number to 50%.

Free DirecTV and double miles for tickets booked on the web site by the end of June.

Will be curious to see the "Sales" on that because WN's DING sales are now what were regular sales a year ago, so not much of a sale in the first place. I have found some of NWA regular fare have matched WN's DING sales haha kind of pathetic in a way.

I hope with the new website comes a new destination announcement.. something that rhymes with "Wally Worm", maybe?

Hopefully they dump "Virtually There" for flight status. That thing was so useless.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with me right now but I can't figure out how to book a reward ticket on their website.

Hopefully I'll be able to book DCA-ANC in a single reservation. On the current site I have to book two resevations DCA-DEN and then DEN-ANC. What a pain.

Maybe they'll mirror AS by giving pax a 1000 bonus miles for booking a first time reservation on their webiste.

It just let me precisely that - on the old website - in a single reservation.

DCA-DEN-ANC May 22 returning ANC-DEN-DCA on 29 May. I doubt you would like the price - $1184.95.

It would not let me book on a couple of other dates, because one or other leg was full. But it explained why.

DCA-DEN-ANC May 22 returning ANC-DEN-DCA on 29 May.

Mariner,

I just tried again. Forward looking, try outbound DCA-ANC Aug 8th, returning Aug 25 and let me know what you get. I want to make sure its not operator error on my part.  crossfingers

My request is within the seasonal parameters. As I recall the DEN-ANC flights 888 and 889 are offered daily, possibly because my departure date is just shy of two and a half months out. I thought they called that planning.

I'll try again on Tuesday on the upgraded site.

No, I don't think it is operator error on your part. I think it is over-optimism on your part.

I tried your dates - out 8/8 return 8/25 and I got the "may be sold out" message.

I changed the outward date - ex DCA on 8/9 and return 8/25 and it let me book it.

Or rather, it let me go to the "credit card number" stage in the process. i didn't actually book it.  Smile

I think part of the reason why frontier's bookings are so low is partly due to their web address; http://www.frontierairlines.com

I cant emphasize how many times i've typed in http://www.frontier.com
and received the Frontier Insurance Group  Yeah sure even after knowing that its frontierairlines.com I still accidentally type in frontier.com periodically.

The average customer would get frustrated and wouldent even bother, they'd probably go on orbitz and search instead.

MUCH better than their old site, which looked a bit FrontPage-ish...

Only areas for improvement:

They still use VirtuallyThere... grr... they could get flight status info on a simple SOAP call and make it look like their own. Not impressed with VirtuallyThere at all...

They made the flash movie of the route map smaller. That sucks -- I always liked it. Is it me or did the move the globe to the left (meaning you can see a lot of the Atlantic)? Perhaps a hint on their next expansion (carribean??)...

Overall, very impressed. Like it a whole lot.

another thing still not improved is that's still impossible to book a Frontier flight if you don't live / have a billing address in the USA. They loose their share of foreign travellers this way. I don't take this BS anymore like that foreign addressed creditcards (Mastercard, Visa, AmEx) are too unsafe. If I book a ticket on a stolen creditcard I can always be arrested at the gate, right?

I think it's a big improvement.

I personally do not like the route map.

Did anyone notice the link to airliners.net on the new F9 web site?

I noticed that Frontier named the polar bear mother & cub on A/C 944. It shows a "Tale of the Tails" in the fun stuff section of the web site.

It looks like their names are "Alberta" and "Clipper."

I guess this is in honor of their new YYC service started soon.

A group of 22 lucky Frontier employees are flying to Hamburg in July to pick up A/C 948.

The bear on the front page just ate my pointer!

I don't see any obvious link from the front page to the "ding!" like downloadable. Perhaps it will be available in a later release. If so, it's odd that it was mentioned in the Rocky Mountain News article.

Great looking web site, very professional. Though some one mentioned they did not like the route map, I'll agree, as it is the same map from the old site.

The new site is currently down and has been for the past hour. Not a good sign and I'm sure it's not helping their ticket sales today, but I understand they're working on a fix.

I love that route map - it is a keepsake from the old site. And I did not have a problem with the old site.

However, I do prefer the single page map, which I can only find in .pdf:

I've never worked "in" I.T., that is true. But my profession requires that I work "with" I.T. all the time. It's not surprising that the site was not working. This type of thing happens all too frequently. But I don't mean to insult I.T. professionals (my apologies if I have done so). It is a tough business and it is a very complex beast, which is why there are issues when migrating any part of technology.

I would've thought, though, that they would have a contingency plan in place to revert back to the old site if the new one ran into issues. I'm surprised the new site was down for a few hours. I would think I.T. would have reverted back to the old site after just 30 minutes of down-time.

No worries! I wasnt offended. Most of the time our issues start snowballing and I have users calling me at midnight wanting to know why the servers werent up at 8:00 like we promised, so I've been there.

I do think they needed to have some sort of backup plan or have a link on thier old site for a while which allowed you to preview the new site. Kind of like www.yahoo.com did today. I would imagine most of thier issues today resulted in too much traffic from everyone checking out the new site.

This is what had happened when F9 tried to launch the web site last Tuesday -

The new website utilizes four servers to serve up pages to our customers, which will allow web traffic to grow without affecting the site’s performance. In front of these servers are load balancers, which divide the traffic amongst the servers in an effort not to stress any particular server. There was a defect within the load balancers, which caused them to make the website servers unstable and crash. In the end, we launched with only two of the four servers and without load balancers. A new solution is already under review.

Okay, I like the new website very much, but - human nature - it's fun to find the nits.

Such as: the route map on the downloable .pdf timetable does not show LAX-SFO.
