Airbus Commit A320F Conversion With Irkut & MIG

Tue May 16, 2006 10:06 pm

Nice to see

By Andrea Rothman and Brian Parkin
May 16 (Bloomberg) -- European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co.'s Airbus division, the world's biggest maker of commercial aircraft, signed a preliminary accord for Russian companies to convert as many as 450 of its A320 model series to carry cargo.

[END - Fair use excerpt - http://www.bloomberg.com ]

This will cover A319/A320 & A321 models cost of each conversion said to be US$4-5 million contingent on model.

Airbus / EADS have issued a press release but I can't see it on their site

http://www.eads.com Email me if you cannot access it and I'll forward the PDF. This should be good for residual values of this series IMO and no doubt adds further fuel to SU A350 / B787 competition.

Target to begin with the conversion work is 2011. However, details have yet to be clarified. Would thus assume we talk about a LoI here. MIG/Irkut are supposed to take over "development and maintenance", what ever this means.

Maintenance might just be the wrong work, and might mean conversion. Development however has already been done by Airbus as war as I know?!?

A very positive development. It will be interesting when the specifications are released. Then we can have the "will FedEx replace their 727Fs with 320Fs" thread!  Smile

I don't think so. We are talking about the mods needed to make the A320 a good freighter. This may include things like enlarged doors, interior cargo handling setups, stronger landing gear, increased fuel storage, etc, etc, etc. I don't think there is an A320F conversion out there yet, is there?
Inspiration, move me brightly!

1.5 years ago I talked to one of the senior managers in their Hamburg plant and was told that the development work of an A320F had basically been done but implementation been put on hold due to the very good market value of the A320 as a pax frame, which would make it too hard to get enough A320 to make a conversion line viable.

My bet is that they will rather go with an A320-200F and A321-200F mix. The A320 as a more or less 1:1 replacement for the 727-200Fs, the A321 to somewhat close the gap between the 722F and 312F.

Keesje

That's a nice modified photo though I have to admit that after reading the PDF a second time the conversion program does not, at this stage, include the A319. My error sir.

This a great news, shame it will take so long.

Just to mention, i think that this could see FedEx replace the B727F's with A320F/A321F's. And DHL aswell.

Thanks
Mike
