United Introduces You To The Regional Jet: Evolved

Wed May 17, 2006 5:17 am

United has unveiled a page on united.com dedicated to introducing customers to explus, the airline's regional jet product featuring UnitedFirst and EconomyPlus. It goes along with the ads United has released as of late, featuring animated scenes and renditions of Rhapsody in Blue, as well as a video of an explus first class cabin. It's nice, though the sun and moon kinda freak me out.

It is a wonderful addition and shows that United Airlines is thinking outside of the box and trying very hard to making flying a pleasure... again!

Why spend all the cash to market it as Explus instead of just making it the regular express product?

They apparently thought re-branding was necessary. Having flown United once in the last 30 years, I wouldn't know if it was or not.

Couldnt have been that bad, as that one flight was an RJ and it was just fine.

I like the variations on Rhapsody.

Uuugggghhh... vomit  I hate those commercials. This new line of "Rhapsody in Blue" ads makes about as much sense as GKirk after a night on the town.  Wink

It's interesting you say that. I've heard others say the same thing. But oddly, in studies, UA's new commercials rate very highly with business travellers (obviously their target audience).

United is seperating itself from the pack of other airlines DL, NW, CO, AA et al in the CRJ/ERJ markets they serve. United Airlines is doing away with the feeling that many have about the "dream jets", and turning the experience into something postive. United has done the same with the JFK Trans-Con market. It is all about raising the bar and re-branding...

ps...

Just wait until the new P and J International products are put on display!  wink

Re-branding isn't something you have to do unless your product beforehand was absolutely in the shitter. I've had a few flights on UAx Dash-8's and truthfully they weren't bad experiences. An update of the cabin is fine and dandy, but they're wasting too much money to make too much of a big deal out of it. Why not call it what it is: United Express; Fast, Clean, Comfortable.

Now that CRJs (of whatever variety) are serving flights well over 2 ½ hrs, you have to upgrade the product. The E-jets are great but there just aren’t enough of them. UA has done the right thing but they won’t be the last. Of course, all of this is happening because legacy airlines are shrinking their fleet and shifting more and more domestic flying to regional carriers. Trying to maintain the network is important for a network carrier and a CR7 w/ extra space is still a lot cheaper to operate than a mainline aircraft.

Because with the larger regional jets comes the ability to include first and econplus products, both of which command a premium price, allowing for greater potential revenue. Not only that, but the ability for MileagePlus member to upgrade on flights that previously would have been in an all-coach configuration is a huge benefit and differentiates the product from its peers. Also, since these aircraft are being dispatched on some pretty long routes that might not be viable on mainline aircraft, greater comfort through providing first and econplus seating can be accomplished.
