MSY To Europe On World Airways MD-11

Wed May 17, 2006 6:43 am

State Farm is chartering a World MD-11 to do a MSY-Europe flight this July, not sure which city yet. The aircraft will park at gate C1 or C11 here. MSY spotters, be on the lookout. I haven't seen an M11 here since DL did an equipment swap with one about two years ago.

What is the purpose of this flight? Is it a single flight or do they operate it multiple times?

State Farm does yearly incentive worldwide charters for its agents. ATA for many years handled them with L-1011 flights from multiple US gateways.

In years long past, World was the leader in this type of incentive travel. Trans International, later Trans America swiftly followed. When governmental rules and regulations were changed, WOA and TIA were scaled way down.

Both airlines flew stretch 8's and 747's. A tight squeeze for the pax, but they were fun flights. Everyone knew each other, they were going to a new destination, and were being hosted by a major company. These were purely pleasure flights.

World has really no connection with the former World Airways. TIA is long gone IIRC. Check the photo database for different a/c in all parts of the world.

What makes you believe this?

Other than the fact that it has continuously been operating for 58 years? This is absolutely the same company that Ed Daly ran, and has evolved organically rather than shut down and restarted with different people like, say, Pan Am 3 or Braniff 3. It has changed majority owners over the years, and its senior executives have come and gone, but it *is* the same company. Heck, just last year, they just flew Ken Healy, the captain of the famed Last Flight From DaNang, back to Vietnam with a group of other pilots, flight attendants and staff that were part of the operation in 1975, to commemorate Operation Babylift, which Ed Daly did in defiance of the State Department. Are they a different, less-personality-driven carrier than they were when it was Ed's place? Sure. But it really is the same company.

There were a couple of threads on here last year about the State Farm charters. World took the business away from Delta, which had handled it the previous year. Apparently, State Farm was impressed at how flexible World was in responding to their requests, and the pax were happy. Clipper002, who is an expert on this stuff, indicated that the program actually required more than two aircraft to pull off, and there was a lot of aircraft down time, so they would have to see how profitable the whole thing was, what the AMC demands would be, and whether it was worth doing again. I guess they decided that it was worth doing again this year.

Last year's threads:

Wjcandee,

I do stand corrected. Thank you for bringing me up to date on the "old" World Airways. I worked for them from '75-'78. If any F/A's from those days would contact me, I'd love to hear from them. E-mail me please. I flew with a lot of you and you were a terrific group. I loved BUF and will always remember the "Pickle." DX on the left of the hangar entrance, the F/A office just behind it, and Scheduling (shudder) upstairs on the second floor. Brings back lots of memories.

Wjcandee, thanks so much for bringing me up-to-date. You also fired a few synapses that have been dormant for years! 'Twas a good life, then...we tend to forget the good. It is there - sometimes suppressed under the bad!

That must have been a fascinating time to work for them! Also, thanks for your kind words. I hope that some of your colleagues see your post and get in touch with you.

All the best,

Bill

The MSY will be one departure, and then an arrival 6 - 7 days later. I'll be there for the departure, but I'll be working.
