Crazy Lufthansa Fares

Wed May 17, 2006 10:57 pm

I have been checking online for fares to Germany in November this year. My routing is JNB-DUS return.

I have found the following fares, all inclusive:

EK: ZAR 5,915.00 via DXB
LX: ZAR 6,181.00 via ZRH
SA: ZAR 9,771.00 via FRA (with LH connecting flight to DUS)
LH: ZAR 26,835.00 via FRA!!!

WTF?? For cramped Y class with no PTV they want to charge an arm and a leg and another leg?? Anyone have any idea why this huge disparity?
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Surely wholesale fares (where u have to buy some ground content eg. accom, car etc) would work out a lot cheaper than anything online. Try a travel agent or wholesaler !!!

Did you search via a consolidator or on websites from the airlines?
When via consolidator: maybe the consolidator you were choosing doesnt have that good agreements with different airlines.

And what is load factor on LH flights? If load factor is low, LH will reduce fares (and/or reduce flights). So don't complain, that's a (almost) free market with competitors.

where did you check for those fares?

I just checked at Lufthansa.com and at first I also got redicilously high fares, but than I changed the country of residence from Germany to South Africa and got a fare of 6625ZAR. That should be alright. Rather similar to LX's offer...

When you use the airline's websites for booking make sure the country of residence is correct. I know some airline's websites like LX's recognise automatically the country you are in, LH's for some reason doesn't...

I don't know whether that was the reason for the high fares you found for LH, but it might have to do with it...

Cheers

I checked each airline's own website.

When I first checked lufthansa.com I forgot to change the country and got a fare of EUR 3,330.00

ZAR = South African Rand

For this particular trip there is no requirement other than the airfare, everything else is covered. We recently stopped using travel agents in our company for local flights because online is cheaper.

I just did the search again on lufthansa.com and got exactly the same fare.

Correct, and usually the German site gives full Y/C/F for trips originating elsewhere.

I would not even bother trying to find a better fare on LH.
Fly either EK or LX from our already found prices, or fly KLM for ZAR 6 243 which is very similar to the other prices.
Enjoy DUS.

Speaking of crazy LH fares...I can get a fare of 52.33 USD one-way for FRA-HAM 27MAY booking through regular GDS, but on LH website lowest fare is 398.00 USD one-way on same flight/date. Would this also be due to country of residence information?

Andz, go for EK anyway. We fly to JNB regularly, and recently switched from LX and LH to EK. Great flying, good prices, and the stopover in DXB is more than welcome (we usually make it 1 day, as we have customers in Dubai).

I wouldn't admit it myself until a year ago, but LH's Y product is not competitive anymore.

LH is always more expensive from Dallas. I agree why fly LH when Y is no good.

I will probably end up flying SAA myself as I can non rev but some colleagues aren't so lucky. Emirates is good from my two flights with them.

Ironically I'm currently flying LH in business class back and forth to India because its C fares are 3 times cheaper than BA's and about half as much as Air India.....

You missed the point ... you will probably be able to get some sort of package including car/accom whatever, CHEAPER than the cheapest online fare !!!

We have many fares OZ/USA-CANADA, all of which are much cheaper than anything that can be found online ANYWHERE, by a large margin !!!

Online is good for short point to point fares, but beyond that can't handle anything complicated.

Domestic and international tickets are priced very differently. You definitely want to approach a bucket shop for international travel. They often have significantly better deals than what is available online.

I've especially noticed this in LH. For travel from the US to certain countries, they have another website called weflyhome.com where their fares are much lower than what is available through lufthansa.com.  confused

I just checked, with a fictitious travel date of November 01-23, and LH shows a price of ZAR 4,810 in V booking class (which is available), excluding taxes and other surcharges.

So, this is to bring your outcry into perspectives of reality.  wink

Yes,but only when you live in the UK. If I book here I pay more than you pay from LHR, same with BA, they are cheaper from FRA on most LD flights than LH and I pay a lot less on BA than a local resident of the UK..

The thing with the country of residence is that when you collect miles, they have all your data on file.

My most recent experience they seemed to be very expensive

Booked EI from Dublin to Dusseldorf at the end of this month at a cost of €141

LH were looking for nearly €600, admittedly through FRA as they've no direct service

Its very true indeed. As you say BA flgihts are often cheaper on the continent than from the UK.

I'm now booked at short notice to fly from London City - Frankfurt - Delhi and return via Munich, in business class for 1300GBP - that's VERY cheap.

The thread starter should give the exact dates which he checked. Then everybody can try to find a cheaper fare. Maybe one of the flights is already full in the lower booking classes.

The dates I checked were 13-18 November. I checked again this morning and now suddenly LH is more in line with the others. If the high fare was business class then surely it would have said so. I should have made a screen dump and posted it here.

Fares this morning on the sites (JNB-DUS-JNB)

EK R 5,918.00 (via DXB)
LX R 6,184.00 (via ZRH)
BA R 6,988.00 (via LHR)
AF R 7,418.00 (via CDG)
KL R 7,643.00 (via AMS)
LH R 8,785.00 (via FRA)
SA R 9,901.00 (via FRA)

I tried Iberia but their website doesn't give South Africa as a departure choice so that didn't work.
