US Airways Synergies Coming Late August

SCHEDULING SYNERGIES COMING LATE AUGUST
May 16, 2006

One of the benefits of our merger is the synergy we create by doing a lot of things more productively - including improving aircraft utilization (that is, flying airplanes with paying customers at the highest yields more productively across the system).

Our aircraft utilization has increased steadily on both the East and West side since the integration began, and that’s a good thing, reflected in our first quarter earnings. It’s a steppingstone for more improvements down the road.

With that as the backdrop, management and labor leaders sat down this week to talk about planned schedule changes on both networks that will be reflected in our schedule load into Sabre and SHARES this weekend.

The following chart provides information on some of the network changes that are coming:

New East Flying… …Creates New West Opportunities
LAS-FLL #1..........PHX-SEA
LAS-FLL #2.......... PHX-DCA #1-3 remains West metal
LAS-TPA..............PHX-DCA #1-3 remains West metal
PHX-ORD #6.........Add PHX-ATL #5
PHX-CUN #1.........Up-gauge Express flights to mainline: PHX-LGB/SAT/RNO
PHX-SEA #1.........Up-gauge Express flights to mainline: PHX-LGB/SAT/RNO
PHX-BOS #4.........PHL-PDX with West aircraft (previously PHL-SEA during Apr/May)

Looks like these flights will be uploaded into SHARES/SABRE this weekend.

I don't understand what the new opportunity is for the "West" here.

Were they planning to have the PHX-DCA route flown by US-metal?

At this point, they can't legally since their certificates haven't been merged and the beyond perimeter exemptions have not been dealt with. What this does mean is that HP metal can keep those routes up while US metal handles other HP hub flights

RE: PHX-DCA

You may have heard that an earlier plan called for moving all PHX-DCA routes to East metal, effective Aug. 20, which would have freed up West airplanes to fly other routes. We’ve taken another look at the DCA-PHX route and now will continue to fly those routes with West metal and West crews.

Here’s where it gets confusing. . .

We’ll be loading the August 20 schedule into Sabre and SHARES this Saturday (May 20). That May 20 load will show the DCA-PHX flights as both West and East metal, with the East metal “zeroed out” (meaning the seats can’t be sold). For a lot of reasons, it’s too late to pull the actual schedule out of the computer system, but we will be able to amend it later.

So if you see the DCA-PHX flights in there on “East” metal this weekend, don’t be alarmed. The decision at this point is to keep the PHX-DCA flying on West metal.

Where are the East aircraft coming from to take over all these West routes? I mean if West was taking over some East routes also then i could see where some of the aircraft are coming from, but as of now they really aren't.

PHX-TUS goes to mainline A319 once daily, but that's old news by now I'm sure.

Some routes on the east have been reduced such as CLT-SRQ. Also 18 CR9's which were previously based out west are now based in CLT.

is this as of now or what will be reflected in the August schedule update?

They have been flying for a while now, "hubbing" at CLT and flying narrow routes.

Thanks, I saw the CLT flying, didn't know that there were 18 CR9s doing it as of right now. Thought maybe 18 represented an increase of what is in CLT already...

Old but exciting for us anyhow! hehe I think this is the reason why we got mainline back...we are always an after thought when it comes to scheduling even though we have a huge amount of traffic. No respect, I tell ya....

The beyond-perimeter slot exemptions certainly have been dealt with. The DOT has affirmed twice that US gets to keep them. See this docket.

And US could operate the slot exemptions with its aircraft, under the same principle as having US Airways Express carriers operate flights on their certificate but using slot exemptions issued to US Airways. In fact, US has already operated at least one PHX-DCA roundtrip as an extra section, to cover for an HP flight than cancelled.
