BA Fleet Renewal At LGW

Thu May 18, 2006 3:48 am

Apologies if this topic has been covered in a previous post, I did search but couldn't find anything.

BA's fleet of 737s at LGW seem to be getting quite old. Does anybody if/when they are likely to get replaced? Will they be replaced with 737NGs or Airbus models?

I see that a couple of A319s have already been repositioned to LGW from LHR. Are there any more on their way?

It seems bizarre that such a profitable airline is being so conservative with it's fleet renewal plans when airlines such as BD seem to be purchasing the odd A319 willy nilly!
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

BA @ LGW doesn't make much money, so Willie won't order new aircraft.

The A319 have only been at LGW for a short time each during B737 maint. They are not based there now.
BA Shorthaul LGW has a profit target to meet next year before new aircraft are ordered. Some B737 leases have been extended.

Not old but the interiors probably need a touch of love and care!

Thanks for the info.

Any chance of a refurb or will the profit target have to be met first?

Even a four-year old aircraft can be old and worn out in the interior if not properly taken care of (see UA 777s). I have ridden on a 25-year old JL 747 classic and the interior was very clean and modern (except the toilet, still circa 1978).
BA's 737s were delivered mostly in the early part of 90s so the airframe is not even that old. It's the just the fact the BA hasn't kept it end on maintaiing its interior.
