Problems Out At DTW...

Thu May 18, 2006 6:11 am

Local news is reporting an NW 747 dumping fuel out over Brighton. That's it for now.

Seems like it is NWA 11 that left at 4pm but hasn't made much progress. Flightaware is showing it still in the area of DTW.

I was just wondering about this....just received a text from a friend in South Lyon telling me about it. So it is on the ground now with only 200 gallons dumped?

NRT-PEK is always a 332. It doesn't appear that any flights leaving NRT tomorrow will be affected.

200 gallons must have been the amount of fuel to get below the max landing weight. How do we really know it was 200 gallons? Pilots always referr to fuel in POUNDS anyhow.

I am glad that everything went smoothly. It really is not a major emergency, but the flight could not continue with the problem it had.

Thanks

Yeah I was driving up Woodward Ave. from downtown near 8 Mile around 5pm when I saw a NW 747 coming in low from the northeast. I was thinking that is sure seemed odd to see a 744 coming into DTW that far east as they normally come in more from the northwest when coming from Asia. That, and wow the NRT or KIX flight must be running late today.

They were making a big deal out of this non-event on Ch. 7 news at 6pm. Slow news day.....

probably 200,000 pounds of fuel. 200 gallons would be burned off in just a few minutes.

I dunno...Jimmy Hoffa got more airtime!

200,000 pounds makes sense. I was just reporting it as the news gave it. Any thoughts as to why they would dump over rural land vs. the lake?

Interesting. I missed the whole thing, and I'm assuming it ended with little fanfare. Could one have seen the actual fuel dumping from the ground?

If you get a chance watch WDIV tonight. They had a "hot shot" on the 6pm news someone took with a cell phone camera and you could see fuel being dumped. It looked almost like a vortex off the wing. See if they show it again tonight.

I learned Chuck has a pilots license today. He thought he was all bad today on the 5pm news and he was saying "this flight will probably be headed for 22L"

I saw this plane flying low over my office near I-75 and 14 Mile Road today at 4:55 PM. I thought it was strange that it had its landing gear down that far from the airport. I see planes on approach to DTW near my office often, but never with their gear down. Now I know why.

well, crap. My D70 is MUCH better than a cell phone cam, and I missed it.

Crap. Crap. Crap. (But, thank God for a safe landing, of course.)

Not too many fish live in the woods. Trees can filter a little extra hydrocarbon a lot better than gills (or more importantly, crustaceans and microbes)

Lol. I didnt see the news but I could see that happening. Anytime the media thinks they are in a position of superior knowledge they make sure to share it.

Or I may have cut you off. I use Woodward to avoid the I-75 parking lot at rush hour. Most surbubanites wouldn't dare venture off the highway, but in reality its not all that bad, just gotta drive like a mad man.

If Woodward were actually North/South and not Northwest/Southeast it would be very nice!

Does anyone know of a DC-10 coming in last night around 8pm? It was new colors. I was on Big Beaver around the SBC building in Troy and out making the turn onto final was what looked like a DC-10. It had this hump in the tail making it not seem like an A330 late from Europe. I checked and all the Europe flights were in on time, just in case my eyes were tricking me with a A330. But due to the rain and haze I couldn't get a good image of the plane. Any charters last night?

To cut me off, you would have to be driving faster than me, which is a complete exercise in futility! I am the original Michigan driver, all you heard and worse! I actually enjoy whipping by those Ontario plates so fast their car shakes!

North Sterling Heights, 17 and Ryan to Metro Airport record 21 and a half minutes! Not bad for a chick, huh?

I'm at U of M in Ann Arbor and I can usually see the heavies leaving in the afternoon for Asia, the 747s that is...and on Wed. I saw one real low and was thinking something was wrong with it....but I forgot about it until I read this thread.

Thats just sick. I actually fairly close to there, I'm just over in Troy. Now can you do that with all the construction these days??

Very true, they have no idea what hit them. My favorite is coming north on I-75 through Toledo. When you hit the Michigan state line it is literally like the Indy 500 when they wave the green flag out of a caution. Us Michigan drivers put the pedal to the metal. The only state where you can blow by cops doing 90, 'cuz they are out there looking to pull over that guy/gal doing 100!

Washtenaw County officials are investigating whether jet fuel released from a Northwest Airlines plane that made an emergency landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport this week is causing damage on the ground.

The plane dropped nearly 200,000 pounds of fuel over portions of north-central Washtenaw County and Livingston County during an emergency landing procedure at about 5 p.m.Wednesday, according to the Washtenaw County Emergency Management Division.

Hey PSU,

I didn't realize you were from the Troy area. We need to get together sometime and head down to DTW and spot. Sadly I'll be gone this summer in SLC working for jetBlue. But maybe in August before things get going again.

You a former Colt or a Hawk?

Take care.
