Missed Connection On WN Reward Ticket?

Thu May 18, 2006 6:27 am

I'm going to be traveling on a reward ticket in the near future with Southwest, routing FLL-MDW-CLE. (Flights 2398, 603). As it turns out, 603 is the last CLE flight of the day out of MDW and flight 2398 frequently runs late. I only have 45 minutes on the ground to connect in MDW. For example, last night (5/16) flight 2398 arrived over an hour late and 603 departed on time. In the event I miss my connection, since I'm going to be on a reward ticket [not a traditional revenue passenger] will I be eligible for any compensation whatsoever [i.e. hotel] or will I have to fend for myself until the next day? I would assume that I'd be on my own since I'm not a revenue passenger, but I wanted to find out for sure. Thanks in advance!

you are a revenue passenger, but you didn't pay for your ticket (well, you did indirectly)
For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and ther

don't know if this is the case in WN, but in other airlines, a reward ticket passenger is a revenue passenger, the only non revenue are airline employees, you are giving away your miles/points with the airline so in some way you are paying the airline, however you shuld read the airline contract of carriage and frequent flyer terms to make sure.

Unfortunately I couldn't find any information on southwest.com to confirm what's been said already. Does anyone know WN's specific policy?

here is the link for their contract of carriage:

and here is the link for their customer service commitment
http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/c...nt/customer_service_commitment.pdf
hope this helps, or try to contact their customer service to see what you find out

I quickly read through the links provided by M180up. It does not appear that WN is obligated to provide you anything other than to confirm you on the next available flight. I could not find any mention of them paying for a hotel room for you. See page 31, sec. 90, item C.

If you're delayed due to a circumstance beyond the control of Southwest, like weather or Air Traffic Control delays, you are on your own.

You might also point out that that is the policy of all carriers (including your own), not only Southwest. Southwest has similar compensation policies to all other airlines and treats award passengers just like other revenue passengers.

Hey Monorail,
I just finished up a paper about EC261 and implementing it in the US (besides that point) but my group partner noted for our report that WN does not give out any compensation for delays, missed connections, cancelled flights. However they will get you on the next available flight which in your case would be the next morning.. But definately I would call WN and speak to someone directly that will be able to help you better than I did.

Agreed. What's your point? The question wasn't about Delta.

Why? This topic only pertains to WN.

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like I may end up changing my plans to stay in FLL an extra night and take a morning flight out rather than chance getting stuck at MDW.

Yeah, unfortunately weather is a wild card. I have noticed that the inbound aircraft for the FLL-MDW leg is coming from PHL (flight 1389) and we all know that PHL is a notorious offender for flight delays, even with good weather. And that would be considered out of WN's hands. Well, better to know upfront so I can change my plans.
