AS 737 Combi Retirement Livery

This airplane was at the hangar for 2 days, departed today at around 1315. Anyone know who picked this one up? N730AS

No idea who's picking it up... but can anyone tell me with what is AS replacing the 737 combis? I understand they were widely used in flights within alaska... are the 73G's doing them now?

The 732 Combis will be replaced with 734 Combis (with a fixed partition between the cargo and pax areas instead of the variable partition which is no longer permitted under US regs) and, in addition, AS will be flying one 734F. The 734Combi/F aircraft will fly routes mainly within Alaska, just as the 732Combi fleet has done in recent years.

734's will be doing them with 709AS the first ship as a full freighter as I understand it.

Wow... I thought that some runways there were quite short for a 734! Are they going to be any limitations or they will perform just as well as the old combis?

the only major airport that was a problem as far as runway lenght was Ducth Harbor but AS has since disposed of that route. the question is what kind of A/C will go on routes to Red Dog or other gravel strips, will the 400C be gravel fitted as well?

Jj: N709AS should be arriving in Seattle around May 20th. This is the first -400C a/c.

so then will AS keep a 200? they cant fly them forever. they need some A/C to fly into gravel strips....or they could cough up a few million and have Red Dog paved

Who else operates aircraft with a gravel kit any more? I know that ARCO/BP has the kit on at least one of the 732's they operate between ANC and the North Slope.

speaking of Arco/BP what will happen to those A/C will they be replaced or retired?

well im sure something could be figured out. they could have a larger advanced version of the EMB-120 gravel kit. or one similar to the C-130

BTW is Proudohe Bay/Deadhorse's runway paved?

wow, how new is this? i read a recent airways aritcle that told of a flight to red dog and how it is a gravel runray.

IIRC the newer high bypass turbofans can still be fitted with vortex dissipators; however, they are integrated into the engine nacelle/cowling rather than an external fitting as with the JT8's.

Yes, Paved a way long time ago.

As has been mentioned in the other 15 threads about this AS 734 conversion, the gravel kits and other unique devices (vortex dissipators, etc) common to AS 732Cs is no longer necessary. The runways have all been paved.

BP has three 732s, only two have the gravel kits. The third, a former US bird, does not. The runway at UUK is not paved, but does not see service from AS . .. only BP/Conoco-Philips. ARCO has no more stake in the Alaska Oil market by the by.

That part of the 737-400 is almost the same as on the earlier -200, so the "nosewheel ski" is the easy part.

You can't. That would be a huge HUGE alternation under F.A.R. Part 43 AND a new STC would be applied for under F.A.R. Part 21. It would involve cutting out a huge part of the structure for the gravel deflector and new nose gear type and more.... it would involve a HUGE sum of money, just not worth it.

Not really. The nose gear on the 732's are shorter than the 734's. The fwd fuselage looks LOWER on the 732 than the fwd fuselage on a 734, hence the shorter nose gear.
