Fast Commercial Planes

Fri May 19, 2006 12:53 pm

Hey all, I'm really bored so I am just clicking "random flight" on FlyteComm, and came up with El Al flt. 2, a Boeing 747-400 from JFK-TLV which is currently in flight over the north Atlantic ocean. It is stating the speed at 703mph - I wasn't aware a plane could go this fast. Can the wind really push it to that high of a speed on eastbound trips, or is this an incorrect number? Thanks!

East bound on the North Atlantic yes, West bound no way.

When they fly east bound, they take advantage of the jet-stream.
When they fly west bound, they avoid the jet-stream.

Mind you...this is ground speed...not air speed.

Yeah, the jetstreams can be up to 120kts on a pretty regular basis. But the TAS will still remain around the 580kt, so it will be possible. Pretty nippy tho, 703mph!  Smile

Where does flightaware show mph? I have only seen kts.
If you want to see high ground speeds, check on Citation 750 aircraft (C750) going eastbound.

Thank you all for your answers. I just haven't been on a flight that has been that fast (at least that I have been aware from) so I was curious when I saw it.

I've only seen it in mph. On ground speed it says ---mph. For instance, I just brought up a random flight (Air Comet flt. 901, a 742 from Madrid to Bogota) travelling over the Caribbean at 474mph.

The northern jet (stream) over Japan can, at times, exceed 200 knots.

Example.
One of my flights in an L15, FUK-NRT, at FL410, was whistling along at 728 knots ground speed...'round about 837 MPH.
The CAS was 490knots, M.85.

Coming back the same way 4 days later, was ah.....s l o w e r.

Ground speed 345 knots.
